How did y'all like the Detour?
« on: March 26, 2006, 07:46:55 PM »
The Columbia Detour was my first skid/flip ball (bought it about Jan 2004) and it's the only s/f ball I've ever thrown...

I am soo freakin scared to throw another skid/flip ball ever again... but I also think that I have only experienced this kind of ball with the wrong equipment... i.e.- wrong ball at the wrong time.

I know a very good, respectable bowler here in San Marcos, TX, and he had the same problem that I had with it: couldn't keep it on the lane.

That's why I'm so scared to get any other skid/flip type ball, cus this one just hooked 40 boards, and didn't get close to the pocket very often...

I don't throw that slow either!!  I just didn't get it.

Has anyone else thrown this ball? was it too rediculously strong?
What's the Deal!! Let me know!

I love mine, it is drilled label and sanded to about 600 and just rolls really nice. Doesn't skid flip at all and is a really good down and in ball

I have mine drilled 5&3/4" pin to pap, 25 degree backend, pin above fingers. It works great when the lanes transition to the drier side. One of the best dry lane balls I have found.

The detour along with the overdrive and drive are the most over looked balls that have been made in the last 3 years from columbia. The detour has a core that has yet to be used in it. The overdrive and the drive have the best core ever by columbia IMO. The detour was discontinued to early aswell as the drive. The overdrive is very overlooked as well.

A bunch of people around my area have them and love them. I tried one pretty much label drilled, and it was too 10 pin happy for me. Hit the cover with a grey scotchbrite with better results, but was never the monster ball it was for other people. Had the same issues with a Ricochet Rebound too, which is another hot ball around here.

my detour was a monster. if it wasn't 14lbs i'd still be using it today but my pops has it now. The backend on it was RIDICULOUS, which was one of the these i loved about it. It flipped so hard as well, however "Dry lane ball" not so sure about that one. I had mines label drilled as well and kicked big time booty. Mos definitly overlooked.

Is the Detour pearlized or solid?

Detour was a great benchmark ball for me.  I could read the lanes so well with this ball.  Good length, power, carried awesome.  856 series in team event of Texas State Tournament last summer.  Ball split in half about a month later!  Damn!!  I may try to find another of these babies on Ebay or something.

I BOUGHT A DETOUR 15 LB IN FEBRUARY AFTER NOT BOWLING ONLY 3-4 TIMES IN LAST 20 YEARS. I USED TO THROW CONVENTIONAL GRIP HARD POLYESTER BALL. GOT THIS DRILLED FINGERTIP WITH CG LEVERAGE, PIN TO RIGHT OF RING ABOUT 1-1/2 INCHES AND SLIGHTLY LOWER. I HAVE ONLY BEEN BOWLING FOR TWO MONTHS NOW AND UNDER RIGHT CONDITIONS THIS BALL REALLY KNOCKS DOWN PINS.  I HAVE TWO GAMES WITH 7 STRIKES, SEVERAL MORE WITH 6. WHERE THIS BALL REALLY WORKS FOR MY STYLE IS ON WOOD LANES WITH MEDIUM OIL.  I CAN EITHER STAND RIGHT FOOT ON 25 TO 30 AND SQUARE UP TOWARD TARGET OF 3RD ARROW.  OR I CAN STAND RIGHT FOOT ON EIGHT AND THROW STRAIGHT DOWN AND IN OVER 1ST ARROW. SPEED IS A REAL KEY. THE BALL HOOKS WAY TOO MUCH ON DRY, OR SPOTTY LANE CONDITIONS HARD TO PREDICT BREAK POINT.  SYNTHETIC LANES HAVE BEEN TOUGH FOR ME, ALTHOUGH I HAVE HAD SUCCESS THERE PLAYING OUTSIDE (8 TO 5 AGAIN OR 1ST ARROW)  SUNDAY I BOWLED A PAIR OF 192'S ON MEDIUM OIL ON WOOD(GOOD SCORES FOR ME). THEN ON TUESDAY NIGHT I WENT TO SAME HOUSE ON FRESH OIL AND BALL REALLY STUNK. WOULDN'T BREAK, SKATED, NO CONTROL. WHEN I HIT POCKET IT JUST DIED, ONLY 9 PINS DOWN. NOT THE BALL FOR HEAVY OIL. IT IS STILL SKATING BARELY GOING INTO HOOK WHEN IT HITS POCKET AND CAN'T TRANSFER ENERGY.
MY BALL IS 2 IN PIN 2-1/2 OZ TOP WEIGHT. ON RIGHT CONDITIONS IT IS GREAT FPR ME(MEDIUM).  NOT FOR TOO DRY OR HEAVY OIL. HOPE THIS HELPS.
