OLD TIMER ADVICE????
« on: February 25, 2010, 10:26:03 AM »
Hello Fellow Bowlers!!I am a 49 year old coming back to the wonderful sport of Bowling after several years off.To give you an idea of how long its been i started back with my Full fingertip manhhatton Rubber? After seeing the many Balls out their nowadays an the decent prices i decided to invest in a new  one so went to the alleys pro shop and proceeded to be told all the various prices.I have always thrown a mild curve ball so i asked for a ball that wasn't overly wild and just a mild ball?the man suggested a few balls, the FREEZE being one of them.He said this was a good ball for a person that just wants a mild ball.I must say and i would apricot your reply but i threw a few games and this ball was all over the lanes.I changed my marks where i throw the ball as well as my approach many times just to have the ball out of control? So my question is,1)Is this a ball for a amateur bowler or is there others that you would suggest? Thanks

While it is inexpensive, it is a pearlized ball that can be drilled several ways, many of which are flippy. It isn't overly wild by today's standards, but its ball reaction can be drilling specific. As a pearl, and for you, based on what you have said (If you told the driller the same things), it should have been drilled in a controlled manner. But then I don't know the specifics of your release. The driller should have watched you bowl and proceeded from there. I might have been inclined to suggest a controlled solid rather than a pearl, given your newness to today's game.

Charlest, since im new at all this i have no idea whatsoever how the ball was drilled?Im a rite handed bowler an always throw across the 1-2nd arrows and ball curves slightly for a nice brooklyn?I moved to the extreme left on my approach and tried throwing like i was aiming for the 10 pin and just couldn't find any combination that worked for me.I just had it a week now .Did you say that the way it was drilled has the most effect on how much hook it has? Also due to previous back surgery i don't have a high swing.I guess im stuck with it now but im going to have to do alot of practicing to find the way it works?

I just went through this with my grandfather
He has been bowling since he was 20 hes now in his 70's
he used to own a bowling center for a number of years also

for the last 12 years maybe even more he's been using a 16lb original purple beast, drilled for a full roller (kind of how he throws but his track is not straight over the center)

and had great success with it
his back has been hurting him so I suggested he drop down to 14lbs (15lbs was still too heavy we tried it on something that was a close fit for him)
so he went to his normal shop guy (instead of where I go and drill my own stuff)
and they sold him an older silver streak SE that was NIB, and said it was tame by todays standards,
so he bought it and could not control it,
I looked at the layout and it was a semi strong layout with length and backend movement (which is exactly what he did not want, and that ball has a lot of to begin with)

so I re drilled it for him a full roller setup drill it was still to flippy on the backend
he struggled with this ball for over a year
so earlier this year I found him a NIB Neptune in 14lbs and drilled it for him with a full roller layout and he absolutely loves it
he feels better than he has in the last 5 years or so and is bowling better than he has in about 3 years

if your coming back to the game after a lot of time off and learned to bowl a when rubber was popular
2 things to keep in mind,
the equipment no matter what is still super super strong from any standpoint, the Freeze might be a good low performance ball but its still a strong ball and stronger is not always better

and you have to get used to playing an inside out shot now
its really tough to play straight down and in on todays conditions with todays equipment

after I worked with him a little on playing a slight swing his game is back to where he is happy with it
and Im happy for him that we found something that worked for him
the silver streak is still too much ball for him even playing the swing shot

so just something to keep in mind
maybe try to open up your stance and your line and play the lanes a bit inside to outside and see what it does for you
if not good and the ball is still too much, then you might have to look for something that is very very weak by todays standards

alright to be honest i have seen this all too much happen with bowlers who are old schoolers like urself, an u came with the right approach to the driller although charlest is right about the driller he should have watched u through atleast a few shots. now to answer a question of wat u truly need to start with to comeback in the game slowly an at ur own pace.u have a couple of choices 1.) now they make new balls with new school cores but oldschool urethane covers an too is sticking to drilling like rico drilling which a very neutral calm drilling for just about anyone really an my final opinion is trying to take the polish of that pearl ball u have an bring to something like 4000 abralon to help the ball read the lane as well as smooth out the erratic reaction

I have a couple older bowlers who have found that even with a mild drill on their ball it was too flippy. Depending on the bowler knocking the polish off was a big help and on a couple we took them to 2k

A smooth solid like the Ebonite Boom would have been a better choice for you particularly where you like to play on the lanes. Best way to smooth out a pearl(your Freeze) is too lightly have the polish knocked off. If it's still too jumpy for you, then have it taken down to 2000 grit sanded. Your proshop should work with you to try and get the reaction close to what you want so you don't have to buy a knew ball. Good Luck and welcome back to the sport!

Sorry for the delay, lots of snow and working 14 hr. days.

There's a big difference between having been used to playing between the 1st and 2nd arrow and then moving left. It's both a matter of degrees and modifying your release (shoulders and stance, etc) to make such a change.

While I can understand your having the Freeze hook so much "relatively" speaking, it is not a big hooking ball by today's standards. But if you wanted to remain playing 2nd arrow and right, when you ask the pro shop for a recommendation, this is the type of thing you must mention. Also the driller should watch you throw a ball if he has never drilled for you before.

Unless you learn to move your feet and target deeper, you  may need to either modify the surface of the Freeze, redrill itfor a weak/smaller reaction or keep it for more oil and buy a weaker ball. While many of us can give some recommendations, you should really have an extended conversation with the driller, or a new one if you decide you need one.
