Columbia Action
« on: December 13, 2009, 11:52:13 AM »
Hello everyone! Tonight me and my friend swap bowlings ball. I had a Black Widow Pearl, that i hate with a passion, and he traded me  a Action and $10 bucks. The ball only has three games on it and the BWP had about 30 games. Boy talking about a good deal . My question is what should i expect out of this ball? The layout is the pin under the bridge with cg kicked out and a weight hole in the val area. Its pretty dull looking too. The span is about 4-11/16 which i can fixed because my span is 4-5/8. I have never thrown a columbia ball and im anxious about this ball!

Strong, controllable reaction on med/heavy oil. The Action does rev up really early so you do need oil to get the right motion you need for it. If anything, it's more arc then skid/flip. I've had 2 Actions before and it's a nice piece to have on the fresh pattern.

I have an Action which I still use when I'm rolling on medium to heavy oil.  It is a very low RG ball with a symmetric core so it goes into an early roll and should give you excellent pin carry especially if you play on the heavier oil.  On dry to light medium oil it is way too strong and can roll out if you don't throw it with enough speed.  Along with my Action Packed, it's a really nice 1-2 punch in my tournament arsenal.  It's definitely an arcing ball so it will be quite different than your BWP which was definitely a skid-flip ball.  If you leave the Action with the pin below the bridge it will start rolling a bit sooner than mine.  If you play tournaments or are in a sport shot league, it will probably work well for you.

The ball also respond well to surface changes. When the ball first came out we had to smooth the surface to 2k or 4k for people to use on the house shots at the centers around the shop

Thanks for the input people. I really got a good deal on this ball and watching some old PBA shows with Barnes, o'neil, and Malott  throwing the ball, looks like a very strong piece. Well i got a Jigsaw drilled strong and at a 1000 so ill probably put the Action at 2k or just add some polish and knock my BWS to 4k.

I just added some shine to mine with Ebonite Factory Finish, and the ball was oustanding for medium to medium-heavy, smooth, hard arc with excellent carry. When I lined up right with that thing, I was really tough to beat.
