Regular Scout Urethane or Hi Flare?
« on: January 17, 2006, 12:49:03 AM »
Hey all,

Since there aren't any reviews up for these balls, I figured I'd see what all of you thought. My father-in-law is struggling with reactive gear. He has some release inconsistencies that make it very difficult for him to use anything that flips over at all. He loves his old, trusty black Angle, but he can't really throw 16 anymore. I was thinking of getting him set up with a nice 15lb urethane to bring him back into his comfort zone. I was going to suggest either the regular, black Scout urethane or the Urethane Hi-flare, since it has a bit more core. What do you guys/gals think? Should we just stick with old reliable and go with the regular, or do you think that the Hi-Flare would offer a bit more hit? Above all, we want a controllable ball, so whichever one is better in that capacity will be the choice. Any help you all can give on what you may have seen/heard about either one of these will be appreciated. Thanks!

azkid,

Thanks for the reply. Do you find the Hi-Flare to be at all flippy, or does it have the same smooth move of other urethane? I want something that is going to roll smooth and even whether he comes straight up the back or spins it like a top. What do you think will be the case with the Hi-Flare?

I have one of these with the pin above my bridge and the CG kicked out to give it almost 3/4 oz. positive side weight.

This will flare maybe 2 inches for me, perhaps more in the dry backend.  This ball reminds me a lot of a urethane house ball, with a few exceptions.  It doesn't deflect nearly as much (mine is dull) and will recover if pushed to the right with the same amount of hand as a normal shot.

It's smooth for me and I'm not sure flippy would be a good word to describe a solid urethane coverstock.

Like azkid I find it an arcy ball that works when the track is blown clear from 10-27.  With more revs than speed you might be able to swing it.

I believe he won't get much hitting power at all with the black plain urethane since it has a pancake core. I'd prefer to use the hi-flare urethane.

I use a Trooper which is a urethane with the lower flaring scout reactive core RG Diff of .030, for a spare ball. I have the pin and cg stacked in the middle of the grip. When I polished it, it moved nicely, but I suspect I have more hand than your F-I-L. A lot will depend on his ball speed and how much hand he has and how much oil. The Hi-Flare has many more drill options and it's not hard to modify the surace although it's a lot harder than a resin ball.

If he's 60 or older, don't evenlet him think he can use a 16 lb ball as well unless he's got muscles on his muscles. Tell him of all the professionals using 15 lb balls these days; that convinces most "macho" men. The fact that he can control it better and throw faster than a 16 should convince most rational men.

Thanks for all of the replies. A guy in my local house actually had a NIB 15lb Black Angle sitting around, so my F-I-L picked that one up. He hasn't thrown it yet, but I imagine he'll like it. He loves the roll and hit of the Black Angle he had; he just couldn't handle 16lbs anymore.
