The thing I don't understand about Columbia....
« on: October 12, 2004, 08:16:01 AM »
Point 1:  They make a ton of balls in a short period of time
Point 2:  Many of them are great balls

BUT...

WHY DONT THEY DISCONTINUE ANYTHING?!?!

Jeez, if you're flooding the market, you could at least scrap half of that garbage no one has been buying for the last year now.  The Wired can go, all of the Throttles can go, The Hyde and Jekyll can definately go, and the Ti messenger traction.  I just don't see why they have so much overlap, but they seem to never discontinue balls.  If you couldn't get rid of them the first batch, why keep it around while you make something else that's nearly the same?

I will admit, the Formula, full Throttle, Detour and Bully are great balls and they've sold pretty well so far, but there is so much stuff that hasn't been selling that's still around and it's hurting the pro shops that stock it only to find out that a month later there's something else out by the same company just like it.  Then you get the customers that come in and want the latest and greatest and it's hard to give them the older stuff because they want the newest release even though they don't need it.  This makes the pro shop guy lose money by eating dead balls on the shelf that they can't get rid of or drastically reducing the price to sell it and make way for the new releases.

Why would they come out with the drive one week then come out with the Big Bully a week later. The sales of the Drive are probably going to be down. Why?

The Drive and the Big Bully are COMPLETELY different balls so no, one release should have no impact on the others sales

This is like the quest for the holy grail or better yet, asking what is the meaning of life. There is no straight answer.

Being a shop owner B.R.O is too common now from companies. The situation is too many good ideas, too often needing to keep the plant running.

In some situations I've been in personally a customer will enter the shop requesting a reaction and they state they like columbia300, so i think which ball will yield this reaction. well i maybe don't have this particular ball from columbia in stock. obviously i will try to offer them a ball from another manufacture that will first and foremost provide the desired reaction. But in some instances they request this company and will not settle for anything else. well i have to then order the ball. and what happens? the ball was release maybe 6 months ago and the distributor no longer has the ball in stock. and of course we all know something to replace or over lap the ball will be released in two months. So the distributor won't re-order anything older than 4 or 5 months old.usually max 8 months. alot of times i might still be selling products into the later part of the season and then half of what i want is on back order, and i have to constantly substitute choices.

so i am unable to complete the customer's request for a ball that has the reaction from columbia.

Sell what you have before you order more stock, obviously. Columbia doesn't even give you the chance to do that sometimes.

Good product just lots of fish in the sea. Lot of them say C on them.
