Read Vs Unread Posts instead of...

Just something that I would like to see.  I brought it up a number of months ago, but that was before ownership changed.

I would like to see the posts show up Read versus Un-read.  Instead of new posts since last sign in.  I have a habit of leaving the site before I read everthing I want to, and by the time I get back I forget which posts I wanted to read, since all the old ones show up as not new.

This would make it easier for the people who like to read all the posts, and also for the people whos computer occasionally crashes or accidentily close their browser.

I'll second this request.  I, too, sometimes have to close the site before I am done reading what interests me - *cough* work *cough*.

Yeah, I'd love that too.  Maybe add a box to each one of them so that if you have no interest in reading the specific topic, you can click in the box, and it won't keep showing up as unread.  The posts since last sign in are a little hard to track sometimes, especially like these guys said, things can come up (or somebody could walk in the shop, and 15 minutes later the refresh command refreshes it a little too much) and get in the way.  Or, instead, just add a box next to the topics, so that you can skim down through and click the ones you're interested in to begin with.  Then they'll keep showing up, and you can view them at your own convenience without having to worry about either sifting through new uninteresting topics next time you sign in, or not being able to find a topic you were interested in again.

It's fairly simple to generate a list of posts since your last visit, as all you have to do is compare the timestamp of each post to the datetime (stored in user's record, or in a cookie) of the user's last visit.

To determine whether or not a particular user has read a particular post is a completely different story.  To store information about each combination of a user and a post, and then check each of those combinations whenever the user requests a page, would put a tremendous strain on the server, not to mention bloating the database with a lot of mostly useless information.

IMHO, anything that appreciably slows down the site is bad.

If you didn't get a chance to view all the latest posts in your last visit, just request all posts for the last day.  You'll get a bunch of stuff that you've already read, but the topics you've covered will be at the top in each section.
