20000 Grit vs Newspaper
« on: January 17, 2016, 06:16:19 PM »
Reading older posts most of you have compared 20000 grit to newspaper finish. Has anyone ever found a place to purchase 20000 grit sanding supplies? I have a couple balls I'd like to try this on. Thanks, Mike E

compared 20000 grit to newspaper finish.? I missed that one.

I believe you supposed to use the newspaper to polish the ball to get that.

So the newspaper is the 20000 grit sanding supply.

That's what Justrico said when he first posted that suggestion. The number, 20,000 grit does seem a little high, but anything's possible. It does smooth out a 4000 finish quite a bit and can enter the realm of a shine. Ive gotten similar smoothing results with Bounty paper towels and firm application of dry terry cloth or micro fiber towels. They don't quite get to the shine stage though.

I wish someone with a ball scanner would do a test and show what kind of grit difference newspaper actually makes.

Newspaper, IMO if someone is down to polishing with newspaper or cotton balls. Because they need a 20k surface on a ball, they really need to think about changing balls.

Indeed, I have slower ball speed and higher rev rate and although I tried it a couple of times after Rico posted it, I've never felt the need to use it again. An internet friend or two has liked applying newspaper over a 2000 grit finish. I myself have not tried that.

I think when people need newspaper over 4000 grit or need to sand their ball to 500 grit, they need to seriously think about what they're doing and why.

20k may have been a figure of speech but I can say I've used newspaper on a few bowling balls that were at 2000 or 4000 and the end result would have passed for polished. I was very surprised.

I stopped using polish a little over a year ago and this has been a great option.

I have used newspaper and thought the results were alright. I may do it again here soon on one of my balls.

I second this one.

There is a difference in the relationship between paper and polishing agents and the lane surface/conditioner and it's response
Polishing agents tend to sit up or hydroplane on the lane when smoothed up and the reaction can become eradict and/or uncontrollable between the conditioner and friction where paper allows the bowling ball to slow down easier yet still create length or skid
It creates a similar amount of skid to comparable polish just not as hyper-sensitive to the environment

Thanks to all who replied. This was just an experiment on my part to see if I could take a ball that I knew was too strong for the lane conditions and be able to overcome that by taking the grit high enough. I took a 500 grit factory up to 8000 with UFO polish on top. Ball still hooked too much but 8000 grit was the finest I could find.I am rev dominate with slower speed and know I would use a less aggresive ball on this condition. I just wanted to see how far the cover adjustment would take me. Thanks, Mike E

Yes, you can take it further. I use something called Monkey Jam premium axle polish. It is a gritted polish that takes the surface to less than .05 microns..if you look at the earthlink grit chart the chart stops at .05 microns...actually the finest abrasive listed on that chart is the white trizact pad at .3 microns, while this polish will take it to less than .05 microns.  The polish can be bought here http://www.derbymonkeygarage.com/product-p/7999.htm
I also saw it on amazon before.
