400 Grit + High Gloss Polish vs 4000 Abralon
« on: January 21, 2012, 03:32:25 AM »
Say you have a ball with a box finish of 400 grit + high gloss polish. How would the reaction shape change if you brought that same ball to a 4000 abralon surface? My guess is, the abralon ball would be smoother off the friction, but would still be close to the glossy ball as far as overall hook. Has anyone done this? I have a spinner, but haven't tried this yet...

Depends on what polish you use.

That formula, 400 grit + Factory Finish High Gloss polish, was Brunswick's previous recipe for polished balls. Their Factory Finish High Gloss polish (it is similar to Storm's excellent Xtra Shine polish) was aggressively abrasive and brought their surfaces to the approximate equivalent of P1500 - P2000 grit + a non-abrasive polish (the equivalent used by many manufacturers).

And looking at it that way, yes, a polished ball will be roughly the equivalent of a ball finished at P4000 grit and left matte. (if your 4000 grit pad was too used, the ball will look polished, not flat or dull!), with the P4000 grit ball hooking slightly earlier and having slightly less backend and handling slightly more carrydown, but approximately the same amount of oil.

This applies to many balls, both solid and pearlized, but not to every ball. (Just trying to head off replies from someone who might say, "but my XXX ball doesn't behave that way.")

FYI This topic has been brought up several times over the last 5 - 6 years or so. Basically I'm summing up the general consensus. Not everyone agreed but most people seemed to agree.
