500-2000 compound
« on: May 21, 2018, 02:46:50 PM »
Saw a video on a Radical Facebook page where Mo says that to bring a polished ball back to out of box you should use 500grit - 2000 grit and then compound.Anybody trythis?

Mo calls this process skip a grit. In this case skipping 1000. This process supposedly gives more backend. You can even go 500 then right to 4000 for even more skid flip, backend reaction. The more grits you use that are closer together say 500, 1000,  2000, 3000, 4000. The smoother the reaction will be.

"A polished ball" is a vague, nebulous concept.

You can polish a ball that has a 500 grit base or one that has a 4000 grit base. You can polish with a lot of polish mixture, with a lot of pressure for a long time on the spinner or you can polish lightly with out a spinner. There is a HUGE range of potential finishes for a polished ball. It depends on what you want and/or what you need.

There is never one way to produce a "polished ball".

I agree with charlest. Polished surface is subjective. Every company has different polishes, and grit compounds. Also like charlest says many different factors in polishing on a spinner. Speed, rpms of the spinner, pressure you put on the ball, also amount of time on the spinner. Not to mention polishing with pads, schotchbrite etc.

I have tried this and its one of my favorite surface preps outside of 500/2000 (for oil) and 500/compound (general purpose). Its for when I'm trying to get a ball further downlane than the previous 2 surface preps. Basically you are creating big teeth in the surface of the ball and then slightly smoothing out those teeth with the skipped step/compound. Whereas with the full step down you are creating the teeth and then smoothing them all the way down.

It might be what Mo is doing for his balls but every company has different cover preps. He may just want to give you a generalized idea of a good surface prep that will give most bowlers what he thinks they want to see.

Just to note, The video which I believe is being referred to by JohnN is from a small 5 video series called Mo Know Sanding.

They can be found here:

Mo Knows Volume 1. Cleaning a Bowling Ball
Mo Knows Volume 2. How to duplicate a 500-1500 factory finish
Mo Knows Volume 3. How to duplicate a 500-2000 factory finish
Mo Knows Volume 4. How to duplicate a 500-2000 Compound factory finish
Mo Knows Volume 5. How to duplicate a 500-4000 factory finish

In the referenced video "Mo Knows Volume 4. How to duplicate a 500-2000 Compound factory finish"

He wasn't telling how to "bring a polished ball back to out of box".

He was showing how to reproduce the 500 Siaair / Crown Factory Compound factory finish done by Radical (Like on the Cyclops) on a spinner.

He said at the factory the high pressure machines go from 500 straight to compound.

But on a spinner you have to add in the 2000 step to get the same surface.

It wasn't really a general instruction on how to put a polished surface on any ball.

May I ask what is the difference between bringing a polished ball to out of box (500Siaair/Crown compound)and reproducing the 500 Siaar / Crown Compound Factory Finish ? Sound the same to me. I understand that the process is different between factory and home .

In this statement Yes, the 500Siaair/Crown compound)and 500 Siaar / Crown Compound Factory Finish  are the same.

But in your original post you said:

In the org. post the way you worded it , your saying to return "any" polished ball back to a OOB polish you would use 500-2000-compound. (which as others have said isn't accurate, Like charlest said 'There is never one way to produce a "polished ball".)

You should have said "Mo says that to bring a 500Siaair/Crown compound ball back to out of box you should use 500grit - 2000 grit and then compound.

Okay. Since Mo is with Radical , I was referring to any of their ( and possibly DV8 and Brunswick) balls that come 500/ Compound .
