If I take a 500 matte ball nib and use a brand new abralon pad of 1000 grit with water and do 4 sides of the ball, is it now 1000 grit matte? And what is the difference in matte and other surfaces?
Thanks
Shipper

Shipper, from what I've gathered, matte is just a fancy word for dull. If you use the 1000 grit pad on a ball that was 500, yes it will be 1000 grit.

WSU, I liked your discription!!
In fact matte is the French word for Dull!
It must sound "high class" to drop in a French word from time to time.

Matte = Dull in real life practical terms,
BUT
in bowling's use of these terms, we often use "Matte" to denote finer grits and "Dull" to denote lower grits.
Dull is most often used for 320, 400, 600, 800, maybe even as high as 1000 grit.
Matte is usually used for 1200, 1500, 2000, 3000 (very new) and 4000 grit.
1000 and 1200 seem to be on the borderline depending on who is doing the describing.
