Experienced knowledge needed...using ball spinner...
« on: April 07, 2006, 11:40:22 PM »
Consider this a "FAQ starter"...

For a "newbie" to the ball-spinner and playing with coverstocks...

--What are some do's and dont's of using a ball spinner?

--What is the best tip(s) that you can give from your experience with changing coverstocks?

--What are some of the "must have", "might need", and "don't waste your time/money" items?

--List any "time saver" ideas or ways to help minimize mess.

The best advice I've seen so far is "when you are learning to change coverstock surface, use an old ball, not one from your main arsenal".

OK, now its your turn...

- Use sanding pads (3M, Abralon, etc.), not sand paper.
- If you use sand paper, make sure it is waterproof, or things get ugly.
- Use water when you sand the ball. A manual flower pump is helpful to keep some water on the surface
- Do not use too much pressure.
- Sand a ball at least from 4 sides, or 6. The same applies to polish
- Use a tub for the spinner. Otherwise, things get messy. An old shirt is good, too...

Otherwise... go on, collect experience, learn and grow. It is not wrong to test your sanding procedure on an old ball, and then test it how it changes reaction on the lanes.

There's no magic to it, just treat your ball like a steak: when it is overdone, you can throw it away... so just stir gently and "control the heat" you put to it. Good luck.

A- ALWAYS, ALWAYS,ALWAYS use water as a lubricant anytime any abrasive of any sort touches a ball surface.

- It's better to throw away a partially used abrasive (no matter what it is) than to continue pressing too hard for too long. Except for Trizact, all abrasives, that I am aware of, break down into finer and finer granules. So your 600 grit abrasive becomes 800, becomes 1000, becomes 1200 or even finer. There is no special time limit because it depnds on what you start with, what you're sanding, how much pressure your using for how long and how much water (lubricant) you're using.

Always remember polish adheres better to finer surfaces such as 1000 or 1200 compaired to 600 or 800. Use scotch brite pads and abralon pads only. Sand paper is deadly especialy with particle covers. Reason being is sand paper rips the partcle off the ball compaired scotch brite pads scuff and surface the particle back up to the ball. Always take your time. Dont ever rush cuz things can get messy and very inconsistant.

Always use a timer such as a kitchen timer to make sure you sand each side evenly.
Always use some sort of eye protection. You don't want any of that nasty crap flinging into your eyes. And last, Preferably use it in a place where there is good ventillation. Some of the polishes and cleaner materials can really stink up a room fast.

I use a spray bottle with about 3/4 quart of water and about 5/6 drops of Dawn.  The Dawn acts as a lubricant.
