How often do you polish?
« on: December 05, 2007, 02:52:35 AM »
How often do you polish your equipment when you have resurfaced or changed the surface grit of a bowling ball?  Theres a couple of guys I know (father and son) that use Ebonite/Powerhouse factory finish polish EVERY WEEK and hand apply using a rag before they bowl.  This cant be good for the ball, and its probably why they complain about their equipment dying, but just as a general reference, how often do you re-apply polish?  Once a month?  Only when resurfacing or changing the surface grit?  Thanks

It varies depending on what part of the lane I've been playing. But to sum it up, just when the polished has been "burned off" to where it's gone. This can range anywhere from 20-30 games?

#1, I would NEVER apply polish by hand, or #2, as often as you're describing with the father and son.  They have probably completely clogged the pores of the ball, thus making it seem like it has died because there's no friction to allow it to hook. Just because the bottle says you CAN apply it by hand, it doesn't mean that the results will be the same as if it were done on a spinner.

I do, however, clean the ball after every use with ball cleaner or a Simple Green/water mixture, but that's entirely different from adding polish each time.  Hope this helps.

Hardly ever make a surface change. Usually just buy a different ball for different lanes and keep the maintanice low as possible. All I really do is clean. I have solid balls, I have pearl balls. That pretty much covers anything and when something doesn't work I adjust my self to try and play better. Applying polish is not something I do, firt time I had it done was a week ago to help play a straighter line.

I like to have my balls polished when I resurface them.  Anything else I just call a surface alteration.

I like to get my knob polished somewhat more often.

I agree about the applying by hand, and I have always resurfaced and shined up using the spinner at the center and have recently ordered a vertex 1/2hp for personal use.  I just didn't know how often people repolished their stuff if it was origionally a solid reactive or whatever when they changed their surface.

The thing with our center is, they are buying the storm surface management kit, and then taking the pads, polish applicator, and towel out and trying to resell the polish inside the carrying case (the pads and stuff go to the back of the center to be used when people want their stuff resurfaced, and then they resell the rest I believe a little less than the kit price, but not much - I wouldn't buy it).  People are buying the Mega Bite, Reacta Clean, and Xtra Shine.  Then (before league) hand apply the reacta clean to the ball, then after that hand apply the xtra shine or mega bite.

Thats their problem, but my benchmark ball was origionally a polished reactive solid and right now the polish is gone.  I got some Beans SS and am gonna resurface it then shine it up sometime soon, but didn't know how long I should wait before hitting it again with the polish.

Thanks

On the balls that I keep polished I will always polish them before I go and use them again. So basically, I am in three leagues and all of my gear will get polished at least two times a week...thats the way I roll

As long as the ball is giving you the reaction you need there is no reason to refresh the surface.  Cleaning after every set helps maintain the ball surface which keeps the ball working.  How often the surface needs to be refreshed depends on the lane surface and your rev rate, and the number of games you bowl.

One of the posters reported that he uses 8 coats of polish....it may be that his surface requires attention less often.
