The "ART" of ball resurfacing.
« on: February 11, 2006, 03:36:56 PM »
Lately I've been messing around with my vertex ball spinner, sand papers, and polishes. I've resurfaced my Triple X-factor, Paradigm, and X-factor. I currently have a quart of Storm step 2 polish as well as plenty of sandpapers of varying grits, and I have storm Xtra shine and reacta shine as well.

I've noticed when I resurfaced my Triple-X, Paradigm, and X-factor, the ball didn't perform like it did when I got it. I've also noticed that I can't quite get that box finish shine that they once had. All three balls were resurfaced with sandpaper gradually going up until I reached 1500 grit wetsand. Then I used the storm step 2 polish on the balls. I can never quite get the half of the ball where the holes are as shiny as the bottom half. I've been using terry cloths and pads I get at walmart in the automotive department. I use a hand pad with the CAB to apply the polish, and a terry cloth to finish it off.

The results in the bowling alley weren't as great. I found out that my balls didn't quite finish in the back end like they were supposed to. The balls would sort of roll out and not give me the entry angle they used to. I pulled out my smokin inferno and got great results playing the same line. My smoking hasn't been altered by the way. I've also tried the Xtra shine on my paradigm and X-factor which resulted in too much skid.

If there is a recipe to get the three storm balls back to box finish, I'd like to know. As a matter of fact, I'd like to know that for pretty much every ball I  own. Nothing ever beats the just out of the box ball performance I've got with those balls. If anyone can help me, please do so.

scott.......  I've always used water while sanding balls on the spinner. I've tried using a little water when polishing with storm step 2, but it didn't really show any benefit. I polish balls one half at a time where as I sand each of the six sides of the ball. I found it much easier to use xtra shine polish than the storm step 2. My results with storm step 2 have been pretty inconsistent. However, I am going to purchase step one and try it beforhand.

well, what direction you sand against (compared to your track) makes a huge difference.  You don't just set the ball in the spinner and go at it.

First step is to look at the ball as if it were a cube.  6 sided. Each of the 6 sides needs to be taken up step by step to whatever condtion you want.  Plus if you are sanding against or with the track it makes a difference.
