I'm new to the coverstock preparation, but I'm trying to learn. What is the difference between say a 1000 grit scotchbrite finish and a 1000 abralon? Is it that the scratches are much closer together? Also if you had a 1000 grit scotchbrite surface and wanted a 4000 abralon would you polish up the hit it with the abralon.

IF you don't somebody will!

if your ball is already at 1,000 grit then you need to use 2,000 grit sandpaper or a 2,000 grit abralon pad before you go to 4,000.

What happens, if you skip grits, and go from 1000 to 4000 abralon?

From what I have heard, the general rule of thumb is not to exceed and increase in grit of 1.5 times. If you do at lower grits, you will notice some nasty sanding lines. At higher grits (for instance the question above), I would suspect you wouldn't get a "true" 4000 grit finish. It might be something like a 1000 grit finish with the high spots at 4000 grit?

Skipping grits, going to a finer grit, you'll really not have that finish, as stated above. IMO, you should NEVER...ever ...skip grits going to a higher number grit. If you skip going down,,say 1000 to 500, that's not a problem because you'll either be going back up or that's the finish you wanted in the first place.
Plain and simple...never skip grits...IMO
