Even though it's not allowed by the ABC, do you still use acetone to clean your gear? I've wanted to try it, but I do have ethics. What does acetone do to a ball anyway? Just curious!

Sandbagging is deliberatly bowling lower scores than you are capable of, often done to increase handicap before a handicap tournament etc.

That is my understanding of it, however im all the way over in england, so i dont know if we have the same use for that term as you guys (i would guess we do though)

I have a cleaner by XXX Tenth Frame, called Ultraclean, professional strenght bowling ball cleaner. My local proshop sells it. It says it contains Acetone and Petroleum distillates but does not say what amounts. Is this bad for my ball? Should my proshop be selling it?

In regards to the Ultraclean, in another topic of discussion it was deemed by Charlest that is also illegal to use on balls. I didn't look for the topic, I do remember reading it so a search may be in order.

I had a bottle of UltraClean once. It did a great job, but I threw it out when I realized it had acetone in it and wasn't approved.

Ok, let's be realistic here.
The test in banning a cleaner involves soaking a rag in the cleaner and leaving it on a ball's surface for 30 minutes. If after that, the ball's surface is softened, then the cleaner is banned.

Practically speaking, from my college chemistry, acetone dissolves substances in the plastics family: Polyester balls (we call them "plastic), urethane and resin balls are all part of the plastics family. When a liquid dissolves a solid, baiscally a set amount of the liquid is "used up" in dissolving a set amount of the solid. So a little acetone will not dissolve a bowling ball.

As someone who is not on the fence regarding rules, I will follow them, although I will often disagree with them. Rules such as not allowing acetone or denatured alcohol are there, because there is no control by the ABC as to how much of that liquid is used on a bowling ball. A bowler can use any amount from the tiniest drop to a quart. The ABC cannot control that amount so it bans it altogether.

HOWEVER, you will notice that although denatured alcohol is banned, none of Storm's ball cleaning products are banned and many of them do contain denatured alcohol, as indicated on their label. How odd?

In any case, since no product will remove marks like disintegrating ball return rubber belts from bowling balls, nor will any of them remove spots of glue from gluing inserts, I see no harm in the judicious, that is, VERY cautious use of acetone and products containing acetone, when it is necessary. You must be able to use some product other than having to sand those dirt marks off, which is the only other way I know to remove things like rubber and glue.

That said, I do not want the surface of my balls to be affected by the use of acetone and such products. I do not under any circustances and would not recommend the use of such cleaners on a regular basis, but have no qualms in using them nor in recommend them, WHEN NEEDS BE.

I will repeat what i said last July on the Bowling This Month website about this subject.

I have used acetone for i don't even know how many years and have seen on adverse affects on my bowling balls.
I have bowled in 14 or 15 ABC's and have never had a problem with ball hardness.
What i do is put the acetone on a towel and then wipe the ball off ( the stuff disappears about as fast as you wipe the ball off).
I do this after every league session and every tournament that i bowl in and believe me i bowl alot.

I think acetone works great!!

without morals, you could use any cleaner you wanted to. I use acetone to clean my grips and tape, it give me that new feel

Don't use it to clean your grips because it will dissolve them MUCH faster than it affects any bowling ball. It will make them larger with each use. Use alcohol to clean inserts.

Maybe that is why it feels like new, the outer layer is being dissolved?
