Clean 'n Dull vs. Global X2
« on: March 26, 2018, 11:10:48 AM »
Hey all,

I recently decided to touch up the surface of my 900 Global X2. I hit it with a 1000 Abralon pad, 2000 pad, then used Clean'n'Dull. The ball then turned into some sort of dull-looking marble and wouldn't read anything!

I had to hit it again with a fresh, dry 2000 Abralon pad.

Any idea what would cause clean'n'dull to seem more like polish?

I always do a last step wash off of the C&D with diluted Simple Green and a microfiber.  That sticky C&D will leave a residue for sure otherwise but assuming you probably did this.  Never seen it act like polish after using it but more and more I only use it as a first or second step on resurfaces these days.

How long did you leave the CnD on?

How long did you leave the CnD on?
And how did you apply it?
And
Did you wash off the C n D with a damp paper towel as per instructions.

Unless you accidentally applied it with a pad that had just been used to polish a ball, I have used it for 15 , 18 years now and never had that happen.

Sounds like you never rinsed it off with a wet paper towel, and probably just wiped it off instead.  A bowling "friend" of mine used to do this very thing and had the same result, and then would complain about his ball the next time he bowled.  I was going to tell him he was doing it wrong, but he was a know it all, so I let it pass......

Btw, I use enough to spread it all around the ball using a paper towel, wiping firmly for around 20 seconds or so, then I let it sit on the ball for 1 minute.  After that, I thoroughly wet a new paper towel, wipe the ball off with it, rinse and repeat until all of the CnD is gone.  Then I usually do a quick final clean with Remedy Rx.  Ball is always clean and tacky feeling afterwards.  Works for me.

That's the basic Clean n Dull instructions. Not sure if Powerhouse, the current retailer of CnD, includes these vital instructions.

1. Wipe CnD over half the ball, keeping that half wet for 45 - 60 seconds; it dries as you wipe; keep adding tiny amounts to keep the surface wet, rubbing as you go.

2. Wipe off with a wet paper towel.

3. wipe the dampness off with a dry paper towel.

4. Turn ball over; do the other half.

This works well when you rest the ball in the cup of the ball spinner, WITHOUT turning the spinner on.

Hey all, thank you for the replies!

I was applying a liberal amount per half - about the size of a silver dollar. Then I take an old actual towel (dry) and spread it around and wipe until it starts to evaporate. This takes about 2 minutes.

Once it starts evaporating, I usually wipe it off with a rag that I use ball cleaner on. Yesterday, my rag was still damp from the ball cleaner. The C&D wiped away alright, and then the ball never got 'tacky' and when I tried rolling with it - skids magee!

I'm going to try the more nuanced method of a damp paper towel, then a dry one. I think this was my key error. Note: I've never done it this way before, and always had success...at least I thought I did. Next go around, we'll see how well C&D can really clean a cover.

2 minutes might be too long. It's strong stuff. I used to use a green scotch Brite with c&d as a base for a higher grit but to clean as well. Worked wonders.

Guys, I think you are mis-interpreting the OP's point re: polish... He's saying that because it doesn't roll, not because it's shiny. That's a well socialized issue with CnD now. It happened to me ALL the time until I learned the damp paper towel. Frankly though, I always have to scuff the ball to get rid of the %^&* residue. I love the stuff, but that residue is a real detractor.

This is good to know! Has C&D changed? I had an old, huge bottle of it and it was fine. I had to recently get a newer bottle and have this new issue.

Well since everyone else has covered the using a wet towel.

I've used Clean'N Dull since it was sold by the org.company A.P.P. (Applied Polishing  Products) as Reaction Clean'N Dull.

Another problem that many had was what was called "Glazing", Which happened when users didn't clean their towel or (if they had one) the Lambs wool applicator.

This typically happened on the spinner, Users didn't clean after use and let dirty product build up in their applicator and then spun it on the ball too long which generated a lot of heat and it would transfer to the ball surface making it glazy or polished looking.

This also would happen to those who tried burning C'nD in.

This is why a lot say not to use it on a spinner, They used it impropely and/or didn't clean their applicators and had a bad result so figure you shouldn't do it.

In the org. marketing the company said C'nD was good by hand and even better when used on the spinner.

First it was marketed by its developer, APP, Advanced Polishing Products. Next, Track bought the rights to market it, Track under the Columbia300 brand in San Antonio, TX. They kept the correct instructions from APP.

When Ebonite bought the Columbia family, they marketed CnD under their Powerhouse brand. I think at this time, the correct instructions for the application of CnD were not put on the bottle. I am not 100% sure, since I still have Track bottles of it. In any case, what I included above are the correct instructions.

I do not know if Powerhouse now manufactures CnD or still buy sit from APP. I would hope they still buy it from APP. If they change the formula, I have no way of knowing.

No the Powerhouse bottles don't have the correct instructions, It just says to use clean dry towel and "Apply a liberal amount" (in other words just waste it)

Here's the old the instructions off a old track branded bottle I had:
For Best Results, apply small amount to a clean towel. Apply light pressure in a circular motion, 1/4 to 1/2 the ball at a time. Remove with damp towel, then dry towel & repeat on remainder of ball.

The c&d steps they are telling you is the correct way to use the product
But the 1,000 then 2,000 really smoothed out the ball try 500,2000 that’s what I did
To mine and it rolled fine but I did the C & D process after 500 then the 2,000 wipe off with wet towel then clean with your favorite cleaner.
