Advice for more length
« on: August 15, 2012, 08:11:41 AM »
Just went for an outing with Versa Max OOB finish 500+Rough Buff+High Gloss.
Due to shorter pattern, the ball hooked too early so I wish the ball had about 3-4 feet of extra skid.
Given the following items I have right now may I have some experienced advice on getting more skid?

1.600,1000,2000,4000 Pads
2.Powerhouse delayed reaction
3.Beans Secret Sauce
4.Ball spinner

If you would like more length, I would suggest going up in steps with your pads and then polish it.  You can try 600, 1000, and then Beans Secret Sauce which will delay it a little more than box.  If it is still too early reacting, then go 600, 1000, 2000, and then Beans Secret Sauce. Or you could go 600, 1000, 2000, 4000, and then Beans Secret Sauce which will give you the most length. By putting the extra steps then the polish, it create more length and a smoother reaction to the lane.  Using a spinner, use each pad 25 - 30 seconds on 4 or 6 sides of the ball.

Brandon is right...the smoother the underlying grit is the further the ball will go before it starts to transition and change direction.  If you are still looking for extra length after trying surface adjustments you may also want to consider using a weight hole on the axis to reduce flare.  These options will make your Versamax go longer, however, on a shorter condition you may want to consider making the ball start sooner and use some of its energy up rather than making it go longer.  Making the ball go further down the lane on a shorter pattern can increase the amount of hook you are seeing instead of decreasing it.

Keep in mind that 500 grit + ROUGH BUFF ALREADY TAKES THE BALL'S SURFACE INTO THE 4000 grit range, due to Rough Buff's extremely aggressive abrasiveness.

All polishes should be applied with a spinner, unless you want the lightest of shines. So your option #4 doesn't mean anything by itself.

Bean's warns people that the finest grit one should normally put under Secret Sauce is 1000 grit. SO potentially, using 2000 or 4000 and then applying Secret Sauce should make the ball go longer than the stock surface.

Delayed Reaction over the stock polish should do something completely different. It reduces both overall hook and the backend because it clogs the coverstock's pores and reduces the ball's ability to absorb oil. ALso you need to sand the cover down to around 1000 or so to remove Delayed Reaction nd then re-polish the ball to return it to its stock surface.

Remember also that Secret Sauce and Delayed Reaction will also reduce the ball's ability to handle carrydown. But both of these will get your more length.

However, isn't another ball in your arsenal to handle lighter oil? The Versa-Max is so good at handling its niche, it's a shame to change its characteristics so drastically.

Thanks Brandon, I will try going up to 1000+sauce to see how things work out. But I guess I will give it another go before changing the surface. I remembered the first few shots before the breakdown gave me a pretty good look with lots of pin action.

Chris, as you have said, I have 4 inch Pin-PAP flare on the ball, hence this might also be one of the factors of it hooking to early. But I do like the hooking shape.

Charlest, I do have a Damage sanded to 2000+Beans to play drier inside angles. But seems that the gap is pretty big with VM. I will try revving it straighter to see what I can get before deciding to knock off the oob finish.

I have 2 stupid questions:
1. The longer I polish with Beans(assume everything else equal), the smoother the surface? E.g. Sanding to 4000 + 2minute polishing on each sides will give me 6000+?

2. How do you polish with a 6 side method?

AS far as I know, Beans' Secret Sauce will continue to make the surface smoother and smoother, up to a certain point. There is no formula to estimate what the actual grit level is when you use an abrasive polish. It is something you have to learn by experience. I tend to go to higher and higher numeric grades of sanding and try to use the same amount of polish (whatever I use), for the same amount of time on the spinner, with the same amount of hand pressure.

Once I reach that point, I check to see how the ball performs. If necessary, I will then re-sand to a higher grit level or apply a 2nd dose of polish to smooth out the surface more and get a higher gloss. Usually for this 2nd dose, I will increase one of the 3 factors (amount of polish, pressure or time) to keep some sense of control over what I'm trying to do.

Personally I never use 6 sides. I usually use 2 or 4 sides. I'd only suggest using 4 or 6 sides if the underlying grit level is really rough, like 500 grit or if you want a super high level of gloss. You do the top "side", then the bottom "side. Then you rotate the ball 90 degrees left, then 90 degrees to the right. For the 5th and 6th "sides", you rotate the ball 90 degrees to the rear, then 90 degrees to the front.

Charlest,

I agree. 6 sides is overkill. I doubt you would see a difference between 4 sides and varying the amount of water, vs 6 sides with a fixed amount.

Update: Just had another go with OOB with a fresh THS. I reduced my axis rotation and reduced my usual big entry angle by going straighter.  First 3 games took some adjusting and getting used to, but when I got it right the result was great. Wasnt even using half of my usual strength so I guess I can throw harder when the oil starts drying out next time.
Thanks to all especially Charlest because I learnt lots this week.

your not being very specific on what you desire. there are over 100+ options that you have. dependin on what pads, polishes, how many coats, and dry or wet sanding. what length are you bowling on. what is your speed. rev rate. where do you want to throw. you have to throw in all of these into the equation.
You need to compete for something greater than just winning.

Charlest said it prior
Track "delayed reaction" is really incredible
its like a different piece in your hand, skids through the heads and cuts down overall amount of hook, but read carefully what he said about what it does to the ball.

You wouldnt think that this product would do that by looking at what the product looks like when you apply it to the ball.
I was very skeptical until I tried it
Im on a old wood lanes dry THS, it was pretty good, hard to keep consistent every week there due to the friction of wood lanes destroying your equipment
Suppose I could have done it every week, but I wouldn't say it was the most consistent reaction on my ball in that house
I am constantly searching for consistency in everything I drill or do a surface adjustment
just my .02 worth

Weaker layout, or come up the back of the ball, or put your pointer and pinky up next your middle and ring finger as you put them in the ball.

Yes, I have been bringing my hand behind the ball more.

After 20 games, started experimenting and took the surface to 2000+beans and got more length than OOB.  Will experiment with 4000+beans to see what reaction comes out of it.

I agree with delayed reaction.  It really makes any ball totally skid even if its just a tiny amount of oil.
