after many months and many surface changes...
« on: June 29, 2017, 05:52:52 PM »
My LT-48 stinks. It performed well last week at straight fresh 4k, but the ball still stinks of some kind of chemical. Stink, it smells poisonous  :o from the day I got it.

My hyroad has a strong smell and I put the LT-48 in the same tote for several weeks. The strong hyroad smell is drowned by the chemical acetone type smell.

I got the ball from buddies and when I first opened the box/package, fumes irritated my senses a bit. The smell isn't as strong as before, but it puzzles me to what can make a ball smell toxic after several months and uses.

I'll be purchasing another ball from them next month or two, and I'll mentioned about the LT-48.

Brunswick put extra poison in the LT-48 so it would be a step up from the AK-47. ;)

Actually, since these are made from resins and use chemical additives I'm never surprised when a ball has an odor anymore.  Think of it as smelling salts just before you roll the ball...

Regarding other bowling balls, does the idea that you can't smell anything remove the fact that it's still there?

Jay,

Do you have Clean and Dull or Hook-It?
These are 2  of the strongest bowling ball cleaners. Try using either or both of them on the LT-48. (I had one and have a relatively sensitive nose; I never smelled that strong a smell coming form mine. Sold it because if didn't work for the oil I saw)

If you have either, use a glove and wipe it on one side of the ball keeping it wet with the cleaner for a 45 - 60 seconds. FYI That's a long time but it allows these strong cleaners to work deeply.  The wipe the first half of the ball with a damp paper towel; then wipe it with a dry paper towel. Then do the other side.

Not sure if that will help, but if nothing else works, that should. Otherwise, I'd sell or get rid of the ball, for safety's sake.

i've used CnD but not that method. The smell went away but came back. I'll try your method, hopefully it works.

Now that I remember about last weeks outing, I complained about having a headache after the fist game. I blamed it on the heat, but I wonder if it's the balls scent. I did switch to the breeze in the third game and my headache subsided by the time I took off my bowling shoes.

I don't know for sure, but it's possible..

I know some are much more sensitive to smells than others. I noticed the smells myself on the LT-48, Mastermind Einstein, and Nirvana that were all released around that time and felt they had a stronger chemically sent than most balls I had unboxed. I did not notice it with my Fanatic I purchased or the Quantaums on the counter.

Myself I'm not overly sensitive to that kind of thing but I know other are.

What evidence do you have that their resin supplier has changed, and what explanation do you have when another company's product has a chemical smell to it?

In today's production of bowling balls chemicals are used, many times to enhance friction.  Not all additives are the same, and some may have a stronger odor.  (And sometimes there are fragrances added to make them smell otherwise.)   Chemical friction is more reliable than "mechanical" friction because it's part of the coverstock regardless of surface texture.

I have several bowling balls that have a chemical smell, but it does seem to fade somewhat over time, especially when stored outside the enclosed three ball bag.

We have people who still smoke, and we are all subject, to some degree, to second hand smoke, with all those chemicals.  We spray chemicals into the air to fool our sense of smell and make our bathrooms smell "rosy"; we drive cars and have to inhale exhaust fumes from vehicles all the time; yet somehow we survive.   Out of all the things and pollutants we inhale, the one I worry about the least is from a bowling ball.  If I ever die from this I will gladly change my post (postmortem, of course). ;D

Absolutely zero proof. Took a comical jab at them.

Thanks for clarifying, Alonzo. :)

We all know of a prominent company who adds fragrance to bowling balls.  They make quality equipment, and if any other company tried that there may be a lawsuit, who knows?  But all companies use chemicals.

If we cannot smell them are they still chemicals?   I think so.  Just my crazy logic... And I'm probably crazy.
