After using HOOK AGAIN, I lose CARRY
« on: July 14, 2004, 01:12:28 PM »
I've reported my finding with the HOOK AGAIN of here several times, and have tried several balls and the HOOK was RESTORED!

But what I've noticed with every single ball on DIFFERENT conditions, is that the hook is back... but the carry is GONE!!!

I'm leaving 10 pin after 10 pin and there's no adjusting out of it!!! And that's fact!!!

After the first 8-10 games after using Hook Again, the ball would roar back to the pocket and carry everything on several different shots... but after 10 or so games, none of my Hook Again balls will carry the 10 pin! And I'm sometimes almost leaving the 8-10 split (I'll leave the 8-10 standing, but at the last minute the 8 pin will finally fall)... so that tells me that maybe the ball is not driving hard enough...

Now one of my balls that I put in the Hook Again has already died again... after only 15 games of use!!!!!!!!! Where as the other ones still hook like mad but WILL NOT CARRY... PERIOD!!!!!!!!!

So are the Hook Again effects "Short Lived"??? I think so!!!

Anybody else noticed this???

I'm getting frustrated! And as I type this, there are tears streaming down my face because I thought I had found a way to keep my balls ALIVE so that I won't have to buy a new ball every 3.8895 days.......................... oh no, it's gonna start again... here come the tears again... I can't hold back... it's too late... here they come...

Ric Clint, I myself have used hook again on at least 5 different oil-soaked and basically dead REACTIVE balls and I find your results rather surprising, mainly because they happen to be quite the opposite of mine.

For myself, I found that when I put a ball through the Hook again treatment (followed by a polishing session, since I always sand the ball down first before putting it through the process for 48 hours), what I got in the end was a ball that got back SOME of its hook, but had significantly better pin carry.

The hook that was restored varied between almost no improvement to almost-out-of-box condition, but pin carry was consistently MUCH better for every ball.

Your findings, as well as the findings of other people who did not had any success using Hook Again lead me to believe that this product needs to be tested more thoroughly, and should in future come with detailed instructions on how to correctly use the product.

are you re-using old product?

and is this happening on whick coverstocks?

No, brand new compound every time.

And these are Columbia's Particle Coverstock, haven't had a chance to test any others.

I just wonder if this only happens to Columbia's Particles? Because I think they use what are called little "glass bubble" particle looking things as there particle additive/formulation. I resurface with SCOTCHBRITE, not Sandpaper. So everything should be okay, I would think?

But with these "Glass Bubble" Particles (like what is in the Mass Chaos, Extreme Chaos, Reaction Rev... I think?)... they say once the glass is broken, it's BROKEN! You know?

I just wonder if I tried a Brunswick Particle or Track Particle, would things turn out different?

What does most other companies use as their Particle formulation? And are they more durable or restorable than Columbia's?

I try it on Minatour I think is columbia cover I had no problem carrying the ten. Can you see where the 4 pin and 9 is going? instead of knocking it out??
MAYBE IS HOOK TOO MUCH !! j/k. I usally bring to the surface I would like then sit for 24 hour. Not sand then sit then polish!
I get better resluts if I put the ball in the trunk on a hot day and wipe oil every 10Min.

Ric, I tried hook again on two different balls at the same time. One was an AMF reactive. There was no change. The ball was still dead. The other was a Brunswick particle. The hook came back about 85%. I did not do anything to either cover prior to using the hook again. I have noticed that the particle ball sometimes appears to be losing some of it's reaction  after about 30 or 40 games since the treatment. This leads me to believe that maybe it is only a short term solution. I will really know for sure in about 20 more games. The fact that it did nothing for the reactive AMF tells me that good results cannot always be guaranteed. Maybe you do increase your chances of success by resanding or resurfacing the ball first. It would be nice if Ebonite would put out some direction along these lines. Makes me wonder if they experimented with resurfacing first?

                                  Regards,

I've heard Pro Shops say to do the Hook Again and THEN resurface the ball... and I've heard others say to resurface and THEN do the Hook Again.

So which is the best way do you all think?

I sand to 400, the Hook Again, then do a full resurface. I wonder if things would be better/different if I resurfaced first and then done the Hook Again?

Or maybe it's just Columbia's particles... once the glass bubbles are busted, they're busted.

Maybe the Hook Again better suits REACTIVES better? Anybody know?
