I've switched to a Black Widow spare ball recently and it seems to skid A LOT. I wanted to practice with it this summer before fall leagues to become more comfortable with it. I've read some threads were people scuff up there spare ball because they slide too much.
Anyone else do this?
If so, what grit to use?

slide too much ???
Sorry, I'm lost ....
spare ball = straight shot....
why would it matter?

Quote from a different Jeff Richgels (riggs) forum:
"I think the NATURAL can definitely be a spare ball. Might even be better for some folks than plastic because it won't skid so much on today's oils -- I rough the surface of my plastic spare balls before using them."
That's where I got the idea.

Most people that use plastic don't change their release and notice a change of direction when shooting at certain spares.
Plastic hooks...
By sanding your ball to 800 grit or so it will get into a roll sooner and not hook away from the 10 pin.
Wouldn't recommend this technique if you have either a viz a ball or clean polyester ball.

I too have the Black Widow spare ball and love it. It does exactly what its designed to do, go straight.

I understand this, actually I had a spare ball this season one of the Century 21s bowling.com was giving away, when it came it was polished I couldn't hit water if I throw it out of a boat, when it was dull I made my spares with it, that little bit of roll can kinda be a comfort zone.

The little extra roll and a couple boards of hook I get from my Ice Storm now that it's tracked up from a year of use is a lifesaver on the PBA patterns. I can throw my plastic ball at double wood and cover the back pin very consistently. God knows I leave enough 2-8s in the PBA Experience league, I better be able to make them!
-
I dabble with the surface to get a reaction that has a little roll and cover
a few boards. This way I use the same release and dont get that "skid" down
the lane. Dan hit it on the head, have a little bit of roll to cover the back
pin.

i want my plastic ball to be as smooth sanded and highly polished as possible. when i get a new plastic ball i have the pro shop scuff off the polish and take the coverstock up to 4,000 abralon. then a couple of coats of rubbing and finishing compound are applied. finally, a couple of coats of polish are added.

I see a lot of people toss a spare just like their strike ball, with lots of hand and revs....but I think they should just grip it and rip it like the PBA pros.
Throw it HARD, FAST & STRAIGHT.
If you put hand into the spare ball, of course it's going to skid...it's meant to go straight. But I don't use a spare ball

Same here. My "spare" ball is a Track Phoenix. I just take the hand out of it and fire.

You may be the better bowler, but my car would blow the doors off of yours.

Yes,sand my White-Dot all the time to use on broken down house sh* t in Detroit area .Works great! 1000 abralon does the job.
-
i normally carry 2 plastic balls, one dull for the medium to light patterns (works well on cheetah), and the polished one is for spares and the crazy dry shots, we have one house thats dry all the time, i normally walk on there fresh THS and end up starting with plastic

There's no right & wrong answer here. It's what works for you the bowler. If scuffing it helps it to grip the lane & ride the rail w/out it falling off, then that's what he needs to do. Some guys like to have the 2 or 3 board hook. Since I use a Storm viz~a~ball, I didn't scuff it. I'm letting it track up & it's doing great. If I miss a touch right at the 10 or 6-10, w/my normal release, I know it will hold & maybe break back a board to get the spare. I wear a glove w/wrist support so I really don't want to change my releases for spares, just my lines. JMO.

LOL
I've SEEN you shoot spares that way.
I've used both urethane and plastic for spares.
Both will go straighter than resin.
Really depends on YOU.
Urethane can still be used on dry lanes for a 1st ball option.
While plastic needs super dry for a 1st ball option.

i like to put a touch of surface on my plastic ball. it's a matter of preference. it still goes really straight. however, it wiggles less on the heavy stuff.
-
I hit my spare ball with 1000 abralon when practicing on the Scorpion pattern after it broke down to where I couldn't get reactive stuff through the midlane. Since then I haven't repolished it (mostly due to laziness), but I still haven't seen it skid any less than it did before when using my spare release.

My plastic white dot can move a little at times, I recently switched to a an old AMF angle (urethane) and that thing goes absolutely straight when I break my wrist.
