Azo Fantasy X reactive
« on: December 23, 2003, 05:53:43 AM »
I just got one of these as a gift. It's a pearl reactive. I tried it out tonight. The ball gets very good length and has huge backend if the backend is dry. The angle of entry is so severe that carry is a problem. I also tried it on a pair that had open bowling on it. Major carrydown issues. I couldn't get it to break early enough or strong enough here.
Basically, the ball doesn't hook at all on oil and makes a huge flip if it finds dry. Tough in terms of both carry and pocket %.
Should I try sanding the ball? If I hit it with 1500 grit paper will that smooth out the backend?
I really want to like this ball as it was a gift from my wife and son. The ball is 14# and drilled label leverage.
Any and all help is appreciated.

Louie,

SOunds like an expensive version of the Visionary Green Gargoyle.

I'd use a grey (800-1000) nylon pad and lightly scuff up a part of the ball. Test it and see how it rolls/skids. If it still skids too far, scuff it up a LITTLE more. Do this sequence in small increments, so you don't go too far.
(This process is easier to do with a nylon pad than with sandpaper.)
Do it at the lanes (hopefully with an oil pattern similar to your league or tournament oil pattern, on which it is skidding too far.) so you can test it a few frames at a time.

Don't be impatient.

(Wish I could save this description, as I have typed it 4 or 5 times now, when this same scenario has happened to other people. Hope I didn't leave anything out this time.)

Let me know if you choose to try this and how it goes, Louie.

FYI:
If you can't get a grey pad, try a green one, but be careful because it is rougher, 600 grit. Just be gentle and use it lightly. Remember you can always scuff it more; you can't scuff it less or un-scuff it. You have to re-polish it and start all over.

Louie,

If you didn't do so already AZO DOESN'T RECOMMEND polishing their pearl equipment because it is HAND polished/pearlized.

I owned a Drastic Spec R that reacted that way too, too strong on dry, useless on oils.  I ended up getting rid of it, but I'm not telling you to do that.

Please be careful when doing so not to mess up the cover of this ball.

Would you give everything up, just to do it all over again?

This ball reminds me of the AZO littleboy I tried only not as bad. Very good carry when you find the hole but tough during transition because it was so oil sensitive. I kept leaving 10 pins with the X due to a very late and sharp break point. Then all the sudden I'd be high and leave a 3-4-6-7-10 split as they dried out. This happened 3 times. The ball also seems very speed and release sensitive. Bad news for me as I'm a lane sprayer. The ball doesn't currently have a weight hole. It has a bit of positive side weight. Would a hole on pap kill some backend?

Thanx to all who have replied.

It's a 3M Scotch-Brite nylon pad. You probably have them in your own home. In hardware they're a 5"x9" by 1/8" thick piece of plastic; it appears to be woven, but is not, AFAIK. The basic ones are green (600 grit) and maroon (320 grit), but it comes in all colors, with each color being a different grit (grit being the roughness indicator, as with sandpaper). I think every house wife has them around the house or the sink, attached to back of a sponge (around 3"x5" in size) in green or blue (around 800 grit); they are good for scrubbing non-stick cooking & frying pans because they don't scratch them.
