taxi cab sanding disks
« on: November 30, 2003, 10:23:09 PM »
any opinions on these things??  are they cost effective??  are they worth the extra money??  i was planning on getting one with the wool pad, and maybe the waffel one...

i was reading that they had a diamond 320grit pad, but its like $90.. will it last longer then a regular piece of sand paper??

Well, I'm a little bit late, sorry for that
I've tried those and to be honest it is definitely NOT cost effective. In my experience regular sandpaper do the trick with a much less cost.
Hope this helps..

Thanks.

Jabroni: Bingo! -- You hit the head on why CABS are worth every penny. Especially if you're a weekened warrior who sands/scotchbrites equipment on an occasional basis, CABS are the way to go to keep the ball in round.

Ok Im going to take a wild guess and say that all of you either work in, or own a pro-shop, am I correct in saying this? As for someone like me, if I want to do my own work, how would I go about it? Is it even possible for me to do it on my own, or do you HAVE to have like all the equipment, like the pro-shops?

chun914 -- The Taxi (note, this is the name of the company that makes the equipment, it has nothing to do with cabs) shaped discs are special hook and loop devices with six (I think) lobes.  Regular sandpaper would not work with them.  --  JohnP

TheBowlingKid25 -- With a spinner you can do most of the surface preparation work that comes up.  You can buy one for a couple hundred bucks.  --  JohnP

They work great with a spinner. Also here is a sight where you can get replacements disks. They are A LOT better than the originals.

A CAB costs about $25.00, and should last forever. If you use scothbrite instead of the taxi sandpaper (which should be an adequate replacement for anything besides a complete refinish), you have a superior cover maintenance process.

Given the bigger picture, you seem to get what you pay for here.
