Ball spinner recommendations?
« on: February 03, 2007, 10:07:06 AM »
I plan on getting a ball spinner to use for surface adjustments. I would appreciate your input on the pros and cons of the various brand spinners and minimum recommended horse power needed. Not opposed to building one myself.

thanks,

The Innovative 2 speed is the best going, BUT...not near the cheapest. The Vertex 1/2 hp is a close second.

I bought mine from http://www.buddiesproshop.com/ its the 1/3hp model. Most will say stick to the 1/2hp model but mine does really good and doesnt bogg unless I really lean on it. And it doesnt wobble either.

Mine is from Innovative, single speed, 3/4 hp motor, all metal, and built like a tank. No matter how hard you press on the ball you can't slow it down. Plus it comes with a motor shield installed.

1/2 hp Vertex is the best spinner for the money. You will not find a better one for a cheaper price.

Thanks for the input. Appreciate it.  Looks like the Vortex 1/2 hp represents a durable, dependable, and value offering.

KeglerX - I've been selling ball spinners for almost 8 years now.  There are some crucial things that you need in a ball spinner, and there are some other's that aren't nearly as important.  To make sure that you get a high quality ball spinner that will last you several years, here are the two things that you want to look for in a ball spinner:

1) A Metal Ball Cup.  Ball spinners with plastic ball cups just do not last as long.  Period.  Now they may get you by for a few years, and with very careful treatment, you may be a long time before you have an issue.  But in general, plastic ball cup spinners have a shorter life span than metal ball cup spinners.  Make sure to purchase a spinner with an aluminum ball cup.

2) A High Torque Motor.  Many people think that buying a ball spinner with a higher horsepower rating is the key.  Horsepower is not the factor that determines how easily you can slow the ball down when applying pressure.  That factor is called torque.  There are several ball spinners on the market, including Ebonite's, that use a lower horsepower motor with a higher torque rating.  The higher torque rating allows the spinner to maintain the speed no matter how much pressure you apply.  Higher horsepower motors do not guarantee that you will get a ball spinner that will not slow down when pressure is applied.

I hope this helps you out.  If you're interested in an Ebonite ball spinner, or a price on it, please feel free to e-mail me.

thanks jeff, informative post as always. We're lucky to have your expertise.

Now, I'm thinking to slow it down a notch, think it through; maybe do some more research.  You bring up some very good points, that even a non spinner guy can recognize as valid points.

Jeff made good points about both concerns. However the Vertex 1/2 has great torque and is near impossible to slow down by hand. I have never had a problem in over 2-1/2 years. The Vertex does have the plastic ball cup, but I don't see how it would ever wear out. You don't hit the side of the cup with the sanding pad if you know what your doing. Therefore it just holds the ball while spinning.

Yeah, I'm not saying it's a terrible product or anything.  Just that metal ball cup spinners do have better longevity.  High torque motors are definitely the key to a high quality spinner though.  Low torque spinners are frustrating and just do not work as well.  Thanks KeglerX.

Jeff,

I know quite a few internet bowling supply places and have never seen the Ebonite Powerhouseâ„¢ Tabletop Spinner until you mentioned it and I went to Ebonite website to see it. While I already have a Vertex, I am always interested in new options.

*-> What is the manufacturer's suggested retail on it?

I don't ask you for your selling price because I am not in the market and do not wish to back you into a corner with price comparisons and such. I'd just like to get a ballpark number for future reference. Thanks.

FYI While a metal cup is possibly an essential for a pro shop, my Vertex's "plastic" cup seems to be fiberglass embedded which makes for a fairly sturdy cup. I am not a pro shop but have spun more than a few balls, both mine and friends', there appears to be no deterioration norany wear and tear yet.

Hi again,

The pro shop price for Ebonite's Powerhouse Table Top Spinner is $522.22.  It truly is a pro shop grade professional ball spinner.  And I of course realize that it may be "more" than the person needs for "at home" ball spinning work.  I just want to make sure that people are making an informed decision.  When I worked for my previous employer, we took at least one call a week from somebody who had purchased a plastic (these truly were plastic, not fiberglass) cup ball spinner and was disappointed.  I just don't want to see it happen again to somebody who doesn't have knowledge about it up front.

Thanks again everyone!
