A good source for Scotchbrite pads is WildOctopusBowling.com (www.wildoctopusbowling.com/product.asp?0=206&1=223&3=815).  The pads are listed under cleaners and polishes.  They supply four different color/grit pads at a very reasonable price (shipping will cost almost as much as the pads) and got my order to me in about two days. -- JohnP

Be aware that there are two different shades of gray, and they are significantly different in grit value.  The darker gray is around 150 grit, where the lighter gray is closer to 1000 grit.  One quick reference is to compare the texture of the pads....a finer mesh pad yields a smoother finish, where a coarser mesh pad yields a rougher finish.

10 In The Pit, there are 3 shades of grey. I have a kit of Scotch Brite pads purchased from Air Tool and Supply Co. There is a Dark Grey Pad (#6448) in this kit rated at 800 grit and a Light Grey (#7448) rated at 1000 grit and another Dark Grey (#7446) rated at 120-150 grit. Looks more like 50 grit...lol Then there is a Tan/Brown (#7440) rated at 150-180 grit. Yet the Tan/Brown has a way finer texture than the Grey, but supposedly the grit isn't supposed to be that much finer.......Then there are two Maroons, #7447 (400 grit) and #8447 (600 grit). The 400 grit pad is a finer texture and feels finer than the 600 grit pad. One Maroon pad says "3M" and the other says "Scotch Brite". Ditto for the Grey Pads. Could this make a difference? Kind of confusing. Also, I thought 3M made them all. It does seem that the Scotch Brite pads do have a finer texture than the 3M.

Yep Brickguy221, I was totally unaware of the #6448 pads, as well as the #8447 pads.  I have seen a darker gray pad before that must have been the #6448, because it looked just a tad rougher than the familiar #7448 light gray pad.  I think that there must be some kind of conspiracy at 3M, since they can't even seem to agree on a color/grit combination within their own manufacturing facilities!  They're out to confuse us bowlers!!!

I am kind of confused now.  I don't have the boxes, only the pads.  But can you tell me which ones (grit wise) I have if I tell you what is printed on the actual pad?

This is what it says on pads:
Maroon: Very Fine
Grey: Ultra Fine
Other Grey (same color): Super Fine

I also have green ones that don't have anything printed on them.  They are for some reason softer and more loose than the maroon and grey ones but that could just be how they were handled I guess (atleast I hope).  Are these the right green ones (600grit)?

I have a lot of different pads with various numbers and descriptions running from 150 grit to 1500 grit, but none have the descriptions you have given here. Where did you get these Pads?

From an earlier post, I wrote them down.

Maroon - 320 Grit
Green  - 600 Grit
White  - 1200-1500 Grit
Lt Grey - 1000 Grit.

The Maroon and Green are easy to get. Hard to find the White and Grey.

I tried to verify this on bowl.com but they changed their format again and I could not find the page that had the search option on the rulebook.  Hopefully someone else will correct or verify what I am about to say.

I believe that it is against the rules to alter (sand) the track of your bowling ball only.  If you sand (or scotchbrite), you have to do the entire ball's surface, not just the track.  Not accusing anyone here, just a statement.

Yep, the deal about altering the track only refers to ABC bowlers.  However, PBA bowlers CAN alter just the track if they desire, but ABC bowlers must have the entire coverstock of the same surface texture.  I really don't see what the difference is, since the ball is running primarily on the track only, but the ABC wants the entire ball to look the same (unless the track is worn into the ball).

Don't ask why, just ask what is.
This rules were written before Moses brought down the 15 commandents and dropped the 3rd slate holding commandments 11-15. The ABC rules are harder to change.
