Hot water bath container
« on: February 05, 2008, 05:27:16 AM »
I did this for the first time with a teammate's ball.

Why does everybody seem to recommend a 5 gallon bucket for this?

Holy crap! I think I can do 3 balls in a 5 gallon bucket, besides which it's hard as heck to fill it up in any sink, even the laundry room sink. I used a 2 gallon galvanized garden bucket and even then, I only filled it half way before putting in the ball and the displacement of the ball brought the water up to the top of the ball.

FWIW After 15 - 20 minutes, I took it out wiped it quickly with a micro-fiber towel. Filled the bucket back up with fresh hot water, with no more soap, wiped it again with the micro-fiber towels and put it back in for another 5 minutes. Did this until there was no more oil sheening on the surface when I took it out.

Whole process took less than an hour altogether. Refinished the ball and we'll see what we will see. (actually 2 different balls for 2 different friends.)

Put it in the dishwasher.
Make sure the dry heat mode is off.
Holes down.
I can do two at time.
Walk away, done in a hour too.
No wiping the balls down.
No buckets to empty and refill.
If I don't get back in a hour, it's not sitting in a bucket of water.

Sorry charlest, I have better things to do.

I'm having a 10" stainless steel sink installed when I get my basement finished.  That, and a ball cup, and I'll be good to go

I use an empty kitty litter container/bucket.
It's more of a square shape.
Not too tall...just enough to sink a ball.

As for the dishwasher...I have 3 kids...mine is NEVER empty (even when the dishes are clean).

Me, too. Those work perfect.  When you figure out the level that works best BEFORE the ball is put in just mark that spot with a marker and you're set for quick refills.

I just put mine right in the sink.

I've asked but really never got an answer too.
If water would reach the core, is this not a good thing ? Can this harm the ball in anyway? I've done this to all but one of mine as the X-hole has exposed a small gap that water would get into the core area.

can't see how it makes much difference. I've done it 3 or 4 times now, let each dry for 2+ days, before using them. no problems. If it bothers you, plug the holes when you're soaking them. easy solution.

I use something similar to this 14 QT. bucket:

http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=USPlastic&category%5Fname=20327&product%5Fid=20946

Now for your viewing pleasure I will instruct you all on how to properly soak a Bowling Ball.

1) get one 6-pk of beer

2) open one can of beer and enjoy the taste

3) now think on a way to create a diversion so that the little woman wont see you putting bucket and ball in bath tub.

4) open another can of beer and enjoy the taste

5) when wife is outside looking at the Army tank that you said just drove by you can quietly insert bucket and ball in bath tub.

6) turn on hot water and fill to where the level of hot water is just about 1"-2" above ball.
One quick side note for you slower folks out there: you might want to add the
Dish soap after the bucket is full, Ahemm!! and not before the water is added
as it could get kinda sudsy, Ok, real sudsy!! Ok, REALLY sudsy!!

7) open another can of beer and enjoy the taste

8) after about 20-30 minutes go back into bathroom and check if water has cooled down enough and if so you can now begin the process of bringing the ball out...but first...

9) open another can of beer and enjoy the taste

10) Ok, now pull out from the bucket and enjoy the fruit of your labor...but wait!!!! its soooooooooooooooooo freaking slippery, now prepare to catch the ball as a new law of physics has now been introduced the the average-Joe-bowler which is a super slippery object added with gravity will fall easily to the bath tub and creating a very unusual pattern for the little woman to enjoy .

11) open another can of beer and enjoy the taste since you tried to catch the falling object and missed, well, you almost missed as your bowling hand managed to get in between the falling ball and your wifes tub...but being the stud that you are you grin and bare it...so...

12) open another can of beer and enjoy the taste

13) now comes the fun part: wipe ball until completely dry (here comes a great tip) don't wipe with the towel that you used to wipe off the blood from your hand as it gets kinda messy on the ball.

14) now you must create another diversion for the little women so you can get the bucket and ball out form the bath room and back to the proper locations.
but first, make another quick trip to the local 7-11 and grab another 6 pack.

15) open another can of beer and enjoy the taste

16) now back to the diversion, try yelling out: is that Brad Pit walking his dog across the street? wife RUNs outside to the front as you cleverly put away the bucket and the brand new clean bowling ball...

17) open another can of beer and enjoy the taste..

I take a plastic bucket (not sure the size) and place it under the faucet in my bath tub.  I just run the hot water into the bucket and let the water flow out of the bucket into the drain.  I just keep the hot water running until it get's cold and then shut the water off.  It usually takes about 20 to 30 min before my hot water goes.

I like this process because the oil comes out of the ball and flows over the bucket into the drain.  This way new hot water is in the bucket all the time.

You don't have to worry about water getting into the holes of the ball!  I usually just wait 24 hours before using that piece of equipment.  Water will not ruine the core of the ball!  I had a finger grip come out once but that's the only thing that ever happened from using a hot water bath.

This hot water bath process works!
