Best way to change surface by hand?
« on: November 18, 2008, 11:48:39 PM »
I have a couple of abralon disc. (500 and 2000) and I was wondering the best way to change the surface of a bowling ball at a tourney. With water? The hole ball or just the track area? Any hints?
thanks

If I remember correctly, you are not allowed to change the surface properties of a ball once competition has started. And azus is correct: if you do somthing to the ball's surface, it must be the same to the whole surface, not only parts like the track area.
Additionally some surface cleaners/ploishes which alter the ball's surface are illegal for use during tournament. Check bowl.com for details.

No, any altering during a competition is illegal. You arent even allowed to use ball cleaner during the competioon. All altering and such must be done before the warmup ends.

I was told that you can alter the surface of any ball unless it has been thrown in competition. Meaning, you could take a ball out of your bag that you have not used yet and change the surface and then use. Am I wrong on this?
I agree that you cannot adjust a ball that you are currently using on competition.
thanks for the replies

Copied from bowl.com..

18. Bowling Ball - Altering Surface

Altering the surface of a bowling ball by the use of abrasives while bowling in USBC competition is prohibited.

All bowling balls so altered must be removed from the competition. (See Chapter 7, Section 2, for additional information.)

NOTE:  If it is shown the bowler had prior knowledge his/her actions were in violation of Rule 18, the game(s) in which the violation occurred is (are) subject to forfeiture. In addition, the bowler is subject to dismissal from the league and suspension of membership.

Competition is defined as the remainder of the current game and remaining game(s) in the series being bowled.

The use of approved cleaning agents such as isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and polishing machines is permissible.

Commonly Asked Questions – Rule 18

18/1
When can an acceptable cleaner be used on a bowling ball?

Unless otherwise provided by league or tournament rule, cleaners designated as acceptable by USBC standards can be used on bowling balls at any time during USBC competition. For a complete list of acceptable cleaning agents, see bowl.com.

18/2
Can abrasives be used during certified competition?

The outer surface of any bowling ball cannot be altered with an abrasive after the start of competition. This includes balls that have not yet been introduced into play.

Further, the start of competition is defined as the point the first ball is thrown by any participant for score. This would allow a bowler to alter the outer surface of a ball during practice and not be in violation of Rule 18.

18/3
A tournament consists of doubles and singles events. The singles event is bowled first immediately followed by the doubles. Can I sand my bowling ball between events?

No, Rule 18 does not allow the outer surface of any bowling ball to be altered with an abrasive after the start of competition. This includes balls that have not yet been introduced into play.

The start of competition is defined as the point the first ball is thrown by any participant for score. Since the tournament is conducting singles and doubles concurrently, you cannot alter the surface of the bowling ball (including sanding) between events.

18/4
Can a bowler use an abrasive on just the track or just a portion of the track of the ball?

No. USBC specifications require that the entire surface of the ball be sanded in a uniform manner. Sanding a ball in any other manner would be a violation of Rule 17a, Item 1. The penalty for a violation of this rule can include disqualification, forfeiture, removal from the league, and/or suspension of USBC membership.

Of course you can clean your ball during competition. That's why they have that category of cleaner. Only when a tournament has that specific rule, like the USBC Nationals, is cleaning forbidden.

AND,
unless something has changed recently, you can polish you ball in a bowling center polishing machine but you can't sand it.

best way to change the surface by hand?
pick up the phone and dial us to buy a spinner, lol, you did say easiest.

At the lanes you can adjust the surface of a ball only during practice, once practice time is over you must abide by the USBC rule that you are unable to change surface during competition. If you change the surface of the bowling ball, it must be the entire bowling ball, you cannot use a sanding pad on just the track area, you must sand the entire ball. Around here they consider the lustrekings a surface change, so you can only use them before or after competition.

I found that scotchbright works best for changing the surface by hand at the alley during practice.  I prefer to spray rubbing alcohol on the ball first and then evenly go over the entire surface of the ball using the "six-sides" method.

Sure, Barry, go ahead and give away all the insider's secrets!
Yeah, it really works with a microfiber towel. Even better on rubber marks on the approach.
