Can you use ABRALON pads on Particle Covers?
« on: November 10, 2006, 02:54:52 AM »
I want to know because i own a RObo RUle and purchasing alot of abralons and would like to experiment if you can use them on particles. I have heard using sandpaper onn particle balls can damage the cover? anyone know for sure.

Older particles tended to be either too soft for sanding without great care or too hard for the sandpaper to really do any good (Brunswick's Trizact-finished balls).  Nowadays, it's pretty safe to use sandpaper or abralon on particle balls.  Some older, broken particles will be removed and newer, stronger particles will be exposed underneath.

This is what Storm's Tech department had to say on this topic.  This really only applies to their equipment, but it may apply to other companies as well...

Thanks for the email. We've noticed, in our testing, that Abralon doesn't open up the particles as much as Scotch Brite pads. The Abralon pads did work better than straight sandpaper, something that we don't ever suggest using on our particle bowling balls. With the same ball using 500 grit Abralon and then a green Scotch Brite pads, we observed the Scotch Brite getting  5 more boards total hook and about a foot and half earlier. So if the Scotch Brite pad is too much, you could switch to a Abralon Pad to smooth it out.

I've been told directly by the "Powers to Be" at Legends that I can use sand paper, abralon and scotchbrite on all of their ball coverstocks; that being said, my local pro shop HAS used them all on my "L/LM" equipment and with GREAT results.

The water serves several purposes, it minimizes heat buildup, serves as a lubricant, carries the sanding particles away from the ball surface, and (most important to me) prevents airborne dust.  You can use too little water, but it's hard to use too much.  --  JohnP

Legends balls are the exception, not the rule. Their covers are really hard and you will more likely tear up your sandpaper than the ball with some of their older diamond particle balls! They can handle anything. Other companies dont have the durability to hit with anything.
