How to "Kill" a ball?
« on: July 16, 2006, 09:55:28 AM »
Got a tournament coming up soon that will be played on desert conditions.Have nothing in my arsenal that will work here so I thought I'd try to "kill" an old Track Slash I havent used for a while.
It has lost a lot of its hook, but will still be too much for this condition.
Would love to hear of any tips I can get.
Thanks guys....

Without redrilling it, the only thing other thing that I can think of is a ton of polish!

Use car polish. It will clog the pores unlike bowling ball polish.

4000 grit abralon and then Ebonite's Powerhouse Extender Polish should make it skate.

try the opposite of getting the oil out of the ball. plug the holes with rags and tape them over with duct tape. put the ball in a bucket of oil for several days. then take the ball out and lightly clean the ball---just enough to remove any residue on the surface. who knows, it may help !

Have you ever thought about changing you release/hand position to create more length? Polish will help, hopefully the Slash is not drilled strong and/or for early roll.

You can try a suitcase grip with maximum side roll (adds skid and length, can become uncontrollable at the break point), and/or breaking your wrist back (kills hook/revs, adds to skip phase).

Good luck though, since the Slash is not a dry lane ball and a polish CAN make a ball very nervous and prone to reading dry boards whenever it touches them. Car polish or a tour in the LustreKing are good tips, though.

Shine it up for more length, change to a weaker hand position, try not to hook it, throw it harder, loft it downlane more (ball cant hook in the air) are all suggestions. Or if you like Track, go buy a Desert Heat for cheap and use that all day. Made for those type of conditions.

Real bowling: 4000 grit Abralon pad + high gloss polish

Experiment: use a car wax. it will plug up the pores, depending on how much you use. But try it first before taking it to the tournament, as the results are very unpredictable. I'm not even sure if a deep resurfacing (like starting with 180 grit sandpaper) would be able to remove that wax.

Adding a weight hole to make it negative may help also.
Its something that Doug Sterner mentioned when I was trying to tame down my XXL.

Don't bowl with anything but the Slash for a month and you'll kill it.  If you don't want to go this stupid way, you could try a flare reducing weight hole or polish.  I don't usually like the polish method because it can create over under.  My advice, get a flare reducing weight hole take it to a high grit sand ie 4000 grit and practice hand positions that reduce hook.
