Cleaner - surface change?
« on: December 12, 2010, 11:36:03 AM »
Okay - probably a stupid question, but does using a cleaner have any affect on the surface or reaction of a ball? I started using Simple Green and alcohol mixed 50/50 yesterday - today my Midnight Vibe felt like it had no carry - it slid a bit further before coming back, and I had to move 3-5 boards left (lefty) to get it to the pocket. Also should say that my set tonight was on the far end of the house, close to the door, which was left open, 40 degrees and pouring rain - I'm thinking that might have had more affect on the lanes than the cleaner did on my ball, but figured I had to check it out.

Cleaners should have no effect on the ball's surface. I have used straight Simple Green and it did leave a residue. However a couple of people have said here that when diluted as you have, that it leaves no residue.

Based on what you describe, I'd be inclined to believe that the humidity had a greater effect on the ball's reaction than the cleaner.

Why on earth would anyone do that, leave a door open to the pouring rain on a bowling center?? Safety?

Thanks for the response - I wondered the same thing about the door - speaking of safety, one of the teams in our league is a group of college guys, really in it for the fun, must have walked too close to the door and got his shoes wet, I heard them all laughing and look over and one of them is laying on the lane about 6 feet past the fould line because his shoes were wet and he stuck. He wasn't hurt, but his team mates let him hear about it the rest of the night.

I started using Simple Green with 50/50 water last month and haven't had any problems with residue or change in ball reaction. As long as you wipe the ball with the cleaner completely as you do with any other product then you don't have to worry about any leftover stuff on the ball. There might be a few products out there that will change the underlying grit on a ball but a regular cleaner like Powerhouse or Reacta-Clean won't change the ball motion.

Been using Simple Green over 3 years now, can't say I've ever seen it do anything to the surface of the ball that would change the reaction on it..

I had the case that after (very) thorough cleaning some balls seemed to lack traction. My S&A with Activator+ was such a case. It seemed as if the shell needed about 3 games (maybe oil absorption?) to get back to normal.
