cleaning a new ball before you use it.

what do you guys think about cleaning a new ball to let some cleaner soak in for the first time before you use it? just a thought...

well I remember when I had my no mercy I would clean it with clean n dull after 30 games or so.after awhile I would have to touch the cover up and when I sanded the ball with abralon I could smell the clean n dull in the wet sanding sludge. my thought was the cleaner soaked into the cover and helped prvent oil absorbtion,just a silly thought I guess.

Maybe you used too much Clean and Dull and didn't spread it quick enough and/or clean it off quick enough?

FWIW this is what I do:
I use about a quarter sized dollop in a paper towel (Bounty) and quickly spread it and rub it on half the ball around and around until it's gone. Clean it off with a damp paper towel, then dry the wet half  with a dry paper towel. Then I turn it over and do the other half. I don't use the spinner. I sit it in the cup and allow hand motion to turn the ball in the cup.

On cleaning a new ball:
I don't usually, but today I got a new one and it was slightly smudged and had some dust on it. So I did clean it with one of my every day spray cleaners, not Clean and Dull. No big deal.

yeah I cleaned my new Ebo ball mainly to see the pretty pearl looking solid cover,makes sense? no,me either.

I think it's all a mental thing if u you clean the ball first...

I prefer not to, so I can see what it does then figure what can I do to make it better.

I don't. The first time you get a new ball is the cleanest the cover is going to be. For example, no scratches, gouges, oil soaked in, or belt marks. Although, I have seen and heard a lot of stories that the new Mexico made Brunswick's have come new with plug work on them, a grimy like material on the cover, mis-marked MB's, and cracked out pins. That is why i'm no longer throwing Brunswick, unless I throw my old USA made Inferno's.

when i worked in a pro shop i got a couple balls in that the factory didn't finish prepping so i had to clean them other then that no cleaning i've changed surface on a ball before i drilled it

I've known a few bowlers to adjust the surface of a bowling ball and clean it before they ever throw it.  Apparently they don't like being unable to get it back to the original surface that was on the ball when they first started throwing it.  (Though I must admit that factory finishes can be difficult to duplicate exactly).

I personally prefer to throw new balls OOB and leave them that way as long as possible.  I just them clean after each use with normal cleaner, run 'em though the dishwasher if they've got a lot of use, and use a little "industrial" stuff to get off stubborn belt marks and grime.  I really try to avoid "refreshing" the surface unless it's a sanded ball or a ball that comes OOB at grit of 1000 or less.
