coverstock issues
« on: February 16, 2008, 02:47:44 AM »
I recently purchased a ball spinner and now I want to bring my Black widow from 600 grit to 2000 grit ( no polish ). What steps should I take?

Start at 500 grit, then 1000 grit, then 2000 grit. Wa La!

If you're sure it's now at 600 grit. I would suggest 800 grit, then either 1200 or 1500 grit, then finish it with 2000 grit.  I don't like the idea of going from 1000 grit directly to 2000 grit, personally. I feel it leaves too much in between surface. But that's just me.

If you're not sure it's 600 grit, start with 600 grit, got to 1000, then 1500 grit, then go to 2000 grit. Skipping intermediate grits can result in a less than even finish. Always use plenty of water for safety AND efficiency.

In addition to the good advice already given:

One thing that helps to smooth out the sanding lines is to adjust speeds (if available).
Each time you change grit, start on the slower speed, than flip the ball over and go across the grain on the higher speed, change grit, go slower, flip ball and go higher speed, etc.
By adjusting speeds, ball direction, changing hand pressure, and using lots of water you can get pretty proficient in a relatively short time. Good luck.

Perhaps you have a ball you are not using to practice on??  Even a low rev spinner is plenty fast.  Low grit papers and even polishes designed to take a low grit ball to final finish can remove a lot of ball very quickly.
