Rule of thumb, the higher the grit the easier the length. And because there is less surface it is also storing its energy longer, so when it does hit the friction its going to have more pop to it.
If you want the ball to handle carry down better or get more response in oil, stay dull. If you are having issues with your ball burning up and rolling out, or are struggling to get it down lane and when it hits, it hits like a turd, going up in grit a bit should help you. Make smaller steps first and work your way up. Going from 500-600 to 1000 is a big difference.
