I think what they were trying to tell you is to take a 2000 Abralon pad and with light pressure remove some of the polish from the ball by using circular motions around the ball.
Have you thrown the ball with the factory surface already? If so and you found it to go too long, using the 2k Abralon pad will make it read the lane a bit earlier or hook earlier.
I've never heard that term of 'cracking' the cover before. I was imagining another post about a ball cover cracking when I first read the title. Then I was thinking someone would be posting about using a chisel and hammer on a ball. And if Storm ever brings out a ball with an Abalone fragrance, I will be sure to avoid it.
I tried Abalone as a child and have avoided it ever since although many like it. I am just not a fan of shellfish or snails.
