Cracking the cover on a new Pearl ball
« on: November 04, 2017, 02:31:49 PM »
Just got a new phase overseas or the international version with the R2S cover. Was instructed to crack the cover with a 2000 grit abalone pad. Can any one explain what the exact process is and how to do it. Thanks in advance.

I think what they were trying to tell you is to take a 2000 Abralon pad and with light pressure remove some of the polish from the ball by using circular motions around the ball.

Have you thrown the ball with the factory surface already?  If so and you found it to go too long, using the 2k Abralon pad will make it read the lane a bit earlier or hook earlier.

I've never heard that term of 'cracking' the cover before.  I was imagining another post about a ball cover cracking when I first read the title.  Then I was thinking someone would be posting about using a chisel and hammer on a ball.  And if Storm ever brings out a ball with an Abalone fragrance, I will be sure to avoid it.  :)

I tried Abalone as a child and have avoided it ever since although many like it.  I am just not a fan of shellfish or snails.

Generally cracking a cover stock is the kind of thing that makes a grown man cry.  Not a pretty sight when it happens.
Kind of noob when made this account so take advice with grain of salt.

One of the only two balls I ever cracked was a Storm (other was a Track) but Storms pours weren't near as good back then (over a decade ago).  Haven't had any problems with them since I started back up about a year ago (have three Storm balls now).  Lately it seems the whispers about whose having cover stock issues is with 900.  Seems like almost all the ball makers have had issues from one time to another.  The one company I have never seen a ball crack from or even seen or heard about ball death is Brunswick.  I have a BVP Rampage with 1000+ games on it and still rolls like the day I bought it.   They might not always make the best cover stocks but they do seem to be damn durable from my experience.

Cool have my first Motiv ball on the way.  Had to see what all this hubbub about the Venom Shock was about.

Venom Shock is the real deal.  Great even rolling ball. Especially at 2000 grit. Love mine. Looking at the Jackal Rising as my next Motiv ball.

Thanks guys but I  found out that cracking the cover meant to lightly scuff cover using a 2000 grit abralon pad. It calmed the squirt and snap I was experiencing. Thanks again.
