De-oiling the "natural" way? at least in Summer.........
« on: July 13, 2009, 04:29:25 PM »
Just gave My Cell the hot water bath about 12 games ago. I always use hotter water( around 170 degree). I "thought" I did a good job.

Since I had to go to league right after work today I had to put my balls in the car. It was a very hot sunny day( about 91 degree) and when I took the Cell out there was a large oil patch on the bottom side about the size of my hand! Of course I wiped it off right away. It seemed to perform better.

I think next time I'll put it under the sun for a few hours and see what happens, since the hot water bath has proven not that effective........Come to think of it: oil "may" not come out easily under water pressure?

10 Pin & Greg....I am in 100% agreement with both of you about using a revivor or rejuvenator oven and wish I had the opportunity to do likewise. What you don't realize is that there aren't that many pro shops that have  a revivor or rejuvenator oven, so few people have access to this method. Thus they have to use other means such as they post here. As an example of how scarce these revivors and rejuvenator ovens are, there are 8-9 pro shops in the area that I live in and there is not a single revivor or rejuvenator oven available. If there is one available in this area, I am unaware of it.

Wiping the ball with a microfiber towel before every shot will greatly decrease the frequency of required de-oilings.  --  JohnP

If you have 400 games on the ball and haven't done anything with the surface I would say a resurface or atleast a sanding on a spinner to bring it back to factory surface might do alot of good.. over time of use on the lanes the balls surface gets to about 800 grit.. and the pores are mashed closed from the friction seem on the lanes...

I would not mind 800 grit: I use the Cell in heavy oil.

Since I got the ball sweating oil like a pig didn't it mean the pores were "not" clogged? Or were they "unclogged" by oil trying to come out?

The one thing to make note of here is Dawn is NOT oil-based. Dawn is soap (or more appropriately, a surfactant), and soap is basically animal fat + lye. Dawn, specifically, is a surfactant that is actually soluble in water, which oils are not. Furthermore, it is a "water wetter" and can actually be mixed in small parts with water and ethylene glycol and run through your car's cooling system.

Wherever it got out that Dawn was oil-based, that isn't true.

Oh by the way, the dishwasher method works best for me.
