Title: Denatured Alcohol as a Ball Cleaner?
Post by: tloy on March 07, 2009, 12:03:30 AM
Will denatured alcohol damage a bowling ball? I have been told that this is in alot of the brand name ball cleaners. Who can advise me on this? Thank you

Pure denatured ethyl alcohol is illegal to use AT ANY TIME.
See http://www.bowl.com/specs/ballCleaner.aspx

It has been included in many Storm cleaners in the past. I do not know if they still use it. I guess it was diluted enough that it is no longer strong enough to affect the softness of resin.

here is one of the most outdated and archaic rules set by the abc( usbc ): what types of chemicals you can use to clean a bowling ball. these rules were put forth when bowlers were using these chemicals to soften the rubber and plastic coverstocks of the balls to make them hook more. modern bowling balls do not benefit from the use of these chemicals. in fact, soaking a modern bowling ball in a bucket of some of these chemicals will ruin the bowling ball. however, some of these chemicals, in tiny amounts, are very good at cleaning off stubborn stains, scuff marks, and accumulated residues from the lanes and pit area. i have a problem with the usbc telling me that i can't use a particular chemical to clean my $200 investment. if they really cared they would approve something that really works.

Denatured alcohol contains petroleum distillates in it. These product can soften the cover of the ball. That is why it is illegal to use.

I use it to clean the belt marks and crap off the ball, I've tried it once or twice on the spinner as a cleaner and it evaporates too quick to be useful.
