how to remove oil exactly?
« on: March 24, 2007, 03:32:31 PM »
i understand the methods on how to extract the from the coverstock and have no problem there. the issue i have is how to actually remove the oil off of the coverstock. all i seem to be doing once the oil has come to the surface of the ball is smearing it around and spreading it to areas that were not initially soaked in oil.

Is there a specific way to remove the oil without spreading it around?  thank you.

Microfibre towel. Walmart automotive section. About $5.00 for 10 of them.

actually let me rephrase my question. at first the oil used to come off really easily with just water and then drying, but lately i noticed ive had to used the towel to try and wipe it off. Now it seems as thought the oil doesnt even want to come off, it just wants to spread.

The cheap ones work equally well.

I think this, your problem, is why the hot water method also requires you to put about 3 teaspoons of a household, dish washing soap, like Dawn, into the pail with the hot water. The hot water's purpose is to bring the oil to the surface. Dawn's purpose is to break up the oil, just like it breaks up, chemically, the oil and grease from food. You should wipe the ball off as soon as possible. Then you do a couple of hot water only rinses to make sure all the Dawn is also removed. Then clean it with a good bowling ball specific cleaner.

IMO hot water bath is probably the safest for most folks but I still love the CPR, letting it set for a couple hours. It is not the cheapest but beside using the sun method, it takes out a huge amount of oil.
