Filling the gaps in the Abralon grit range
« on: October 15, 2008, 02:25:59 AM »
I have read a few times that people wished that there were Abralon pads in P800 and P1500 grit. I also think that the step from 1000 to 2000 is a little to big.
Not to get to a good 2000 grit finish, but in reaction on the lane.

Today I tried some samples of Abranet Soft, also a Mirka product. The name says it all. The grain is bonded on to a fabric net and a foam layer. The foam is thinner as with Abralon, but the pad is flexible enough.

They use a different kind of grain and coating method, so the result would be a little different than when using Abralon, but that is with all other sanding methods.

The finish is very satisfying, with an even sanding pattern. It is also very easy to use. The foam gives grip for easy holding and an even pressure on the surface. There's no clogging, because of it's open structure.

I have not tested the result on the lane yet.

Just give it a try.

Looked on SuperGrit's site but the finest grit they have is 600. The price is better than abralon but they don't have the grits listed on the Mirka site.

This website seems to habe 500, 800 and 1000 grit. This seems to be a very new product. If so, most places may just be carrying an initial sampling of it to "test the waters". Then if the interest is high enough, they will probably carry the full line.

Antoine,

Good find. They may work out very well.
I have found here in the states, wet/dry sandpaper in the P1500 (750 US), P2000 (1000 US) and P2500 (1250 US) grit levels.

I too was always kind of concerned about going from P1000 grit Abralon (550 grit US) to P2000 grit Abralon (1000 grit).
With Scotch-Brite or sandpaper, we would go from 600 to 800 to 1000. Sometimes I would go from 600 to 1000 grit or from 800 to 1200 grit.

FYI These grits are, of course, all "P" grade.
