Found a new cleaner
« on: August 21, 2009, 02:03:13 AM »
Saw this at the local NAPA and decided to give it a try on my bowling ball.
Tested it out on a ball I don't really like to see what happens. Sprayed it down, lot it soak for a few minutes, wiped it off with a paper towel, and the ball came out feeling very clean with a nice tacky feel.
It looked like it was actually drawing oil out and beading up as it soaked.

I may have stumbled onto a GOOD cheap cleaner here. It seems like it should be pretty safe to use, I don't see anything about it that looks like it would be harmful to a ball.

I used it today on my hands and arms after changing brakes, axles, and ball joints on my wifes van. Simple Green (which I've used alot) doesn't hold a candle to this stuff. Cuts grease as good as anything I've ever seen, yet it's still mild enough to wash your hands with.

It has been linked to some autoimmune diseases such as chronic fatigue syndrome and autism and some forms of anemia.

That there 2-butoxyethanol is nuttin' to worry about.  Won't hurt you a bit...I eat it for breakfast on my eggs.

Of course I am missing various body parts that fell off spontaneously, but it didn't have nuttin' to do with that stuff!

Bad news, I came home today to find my bowling balls all melted down into little globs of plastic.

If only it was NAMED "bowling ball oil eater" that would have never happened.

Why the need to get all wound up.? Try it,don't try it, who cares.I don't. Thought maybe somebody here might be interested in a cheap alternative to the expensive cleaners sold on the market. If you aren't,then move on.

How do you know Simple Green won't hurt a ball ??

What are the ingredients in Valentino's, Ebonite's, Brunswick's cleaners ????

Has anybody ever read the ingredients in any so-called certified "bowling ball cleaners" ???

How do you know they are any different from cheaper cleaners that are commonly found around the house ???

I have been using simple green and alcohol for a couple of years no problems and I believe it is an approved cleaner . It is also very reasonably priced so I really don't see how any cleaner could be any cheaper

I won't judge what anybody else uses to clean their bowling balls. I would assume that if its safe to use in an engine bay that has plastic parts then in may also be safe to use on a ball. I don't know, I'm not a chemist. I do have a question for all the users of simple green and alcohol. Is it legal by USBC standards to mix approved cleaners? I know they don't test every possible mix that could be made using approved cleaners so how do they know what mixing may cause? Maybe the simple green "mix" is illegal. Anybody know for sure?

Duh! Because it was tested by the ABC/USBC.

Who cares what's in them Because they were tested by the USBC and approved for use.

ALl I was suggesting that you not use until you know for sure it's safe.

Pardon me for caring. I should know better by now that ego is so much more important than personal safety, ball safety or money. Do whatever the <bleep> you want. If you don't care, why the <bleep> should I?

It sure didn't seem like that. Sure seemed like you jumped down my throat without knowing anything about the product, and came off as kind of an @&%. Just because it's not marketed as a bowling ball cleaner, and approved by the USBC (I know nothing about how they test cleaners), you automatically assume the worst.

Wonder who first tried Simple Green before it was approved ??  Windex before it was approved.??? Other cleaners (non-bowling) before they were approved?

Some of us keep our eyes open to lower cost cleaners than what are marketed as "bowling ball cleaners". I was simply passing along one I found that cuts oil far better than Simple Green, and is marketed as safe for plastic, clothing, rubber, etc. , non-toxic, non-acid, water based,FDA approved, and bio-degradable.
All I said was it seems pretty safe to me and I am giving it a try.

I have alot of respect for you on here Charles. You have given me and alot of others here a wealth of information. I always read your posts and replys to learn what I can. You've probably forgotten more than I'll ever know.

I just can't understand why you are so worked up over somebody wanting to try something new. It's not like it's Easy Off Oven Cleaner. I put out a suggestion for a cleaner I found, that's all. Take it or leave it.
If you can point out some type of chemical that will eat away the resin, of otherwise have a harmful effect on a ball, they by all means, I am all ears.

As far as the USBC approval list, not everybody needs to have the USBC's approval to bowl. Some just bowl.

Where did anybody say it was ok to cheat ??? I never did.
Not everybody bowls under the USBC sanction. If you don't, then the list means nothing. If you do, then only use what they approve.

It's also an ingredient in Simple Green. Yeah the stuff that restaraunts are probably using to clean the counters where they prep your food at.
I'd venture to say it is also in most, if not all, of the "bowling ball" cleaners on the market.

I'd sure like to see a list of ingredients, or a MSDS sheet for them. You never know what you're getting all over your hands.

Got me a thinking now. I looked up KEGAL's ball cleaner, they actually have a MSDS sheet for theirs. It's water, alcohol, and the 2-butox stuff. (the same Simple Green mixture everybody loves)

Now I'm wondering if any of the ball cleaners aren't stuff we already have lying around the house. The companies pay USBC to say that bowlers are allowed to use their stuff. You no pay, you no play.

Since, you intimated that it costs to submit a cleaner to USBC....how much is that fee?
