Micro Mesh
« on: July 10, 2008, 11:40:49 PM »
Hey guys, I found this product at a woodworking supplies website. It has the same abrasive as abralon but has 9 grit ratings. The info with them says the 1500 is about like 400 regular sandpaper. The highest grit is 12000. It will make a ball look as if it has polish on it. My Depth Charge at 3600 looks like a shiny/sheen and has been the most useful ball in my PBAX league. I was reading another post about Bean's stuff and someone mentioned wanting some in between abralon pads. This may be something to try. I have no idea how to post a link but if you search for "Rockler' and look under sanding you can find it. I have the round ones which are cloth backed and use a piece of scotchbrite behind it to act as a pad. The rectangular ones appear to have a sponge like pad on the back. I like them but haven't tried all grits yet.

I don't think this product will fill in the gaps for Abralon users. It's sometimes a little confusing with the different standards of grit.

There info says it is "micron" graded and Abralon is "P" graded.
When I look at the bowlers grit comparison chart I get confused by this. The chart says, the higher the micron number, the coarser the product is, this I understand. At Rockler's site it appears to be that the higher grit is finer, but they mention it is micron graded.

To avoid all this, I use "P"graded sandpaper and "P" graded Abralon and try to fit in the U.S.(ansi)graded compounds. This works good and keeps things clear.

Thanks for sharing.

Greetings,

Antoine

I've seen these in woodworking catalogs fr years also. Those are neither US nor "P" level grades. I believe they are Japanese levels. The finest, 12000 grit, is probably closer to 2000 grit US, which is 4000 grit Abralon or "P" grade.
And they are EXPENSIVE!

Yeah, I'm not sure about the grit ratings but I can tell you, 1500 is rough. You better have oil for that one. I have seen the 12000 make ball shinier than I was able to achieve with a 4000 abralon. I have 1 each of 9 grit levels and including shipping they were less than 30 bucks total. i didn't think this was too expensive to try.

Funny that the numbers mentioned are different again from others.

Here 800 grit is P2000. In another one from this forum it's P1500.

We try to make small changes and we can't even trust the charts

Depends on who makes these charts and what their agenda or their ignorance/knowledge is. Like using balls based on ball reviews of BJI and BTM, make your judgements only when your sources agree. There are many. many such charts!
