has anyone tried this?

I was just cleaning my kitchen with one of those mr clean magic erasers, and just started wondering how it would work cleaning up bowling balls.  Those erasers really get down and clean the pores of stuff, so does anyone think it might get the oil out?  Ok well if anyone has tried this, or thinks it might work then let me know.

well... bowling balls are basicly polyurethane... which is a very sturdy material towards chemicals... on the other hand the additivs that actually make a urethan a reactive ball might suffer from such treatment... not at once but over time.

I say keep it simple and keep it clean and you don not have to take such "harsh" methods into account

Beans, I couldn't find the ingredients to the mr clean erasers, but I checked the website and it says they have no cleaners in them, and they clean by using a mild abrasive.  I am not 100%, but to me sounds like a very fine aberlon pad or something along those lines.  I have a few old balls laying around the house that I might give it a try on.

That sounds like it may be similar to cleaning your ball with the white nylon pads. They are supposed to be about 1500 grit, but the abrasive is so mild, it does not affect the resin surface at all.

I suspect that these Mr. Clean pads will clean surface dirt but not oil, which is what you want ball cleaners to do.

My wife uses them around the house I have cleaned painted walls with them without harming the paint. I doubt if they'll harm the ball, but they probably won't do ENOUGH good to make them worthwhile.

ADDED:
The Mr. Clean eraser instructions says NOT to use it on polished surfaces. I tried it on a polished pearl ball in an inconspicuous spot in the grip it did nothing.

I had been involved with the Mr. Clean (Mr. Proper in Germany) cleaning pads/dirt erasers through the advertsing agency I work at, and AFAIK the erasers rely on a mild abrasive effect, plus some mild detergent that is activated when you wet the eraser pad with water.

The sponge material itself offers much surface, like micro fibre towels, so it takes up a lot of dirt but hardly changes the underlying material. I'd consider them a safe option for bowling balls - especially on a spinner they should work well. Could be an option to take polish off of a surface, but not enough to achieve a true sanding effect because the material is too soft in itself. It will rather crumble that tryul sand a ball.
They will also not do any deep cleaning job, even though they should be effective on sanded balls to mechanically clean the surface from dust, dirt and machine oil residue. But will IMHO not do anything against the oil in the ball's coverstock.

The original erasers don't have any of the detergents in them, so I think I will try one just to see if maybe it will clean the polish and other dirt from the surface.
