Help! - Removing Sanding Lines (Scotchbrites)
« on: June 25, 2006, 10:44:31 AM »
Good Sunday afternoon to the BR Family,

It has been a good 2-3 weeks since I acquired a Vertex Personal Spinner.
I am having a blast with it so far!

Just one thing though...Resurfacing a ball and still seeing some bad sanding lines (especially after applying polish).

I took an Ebonite Xcel and hit it with these pads in the order below...

Brown - 320
Burgundy - 400
Green - 600
Gray - 800
White - 1200/1500

Notice, I didn't have a blue pad (1000 grit) handy and had to skip up to a White pad.

I noticed that after each pad use, I was still seeing sanding lines from the previous grit. I sanded each side with equal amount of time.

I even made sure to spray the ball with water and keeping the ball wet while I was applying pressure with each pad.

After the white pad, I hit the ball with Ebonite Factory Polish on a Terry Cloth towel. This made the sanding lines stand out even more.

Help! What am I doing wrong!?

From the Resurfacing Novice,
Ram

Bowling 300 900,

Thanks for the feedback. I'll have to look into sandpaper as well.

Take care!

I would also look into Abralon pads.  They are very nice and don't leave nearly as many lines for me as sandpaper and/or scotchbrite pads, if they leave any lines at all.

Hope this helps,
Tyler

I've used Abralon Pads for awhile now and they have left way less sanding lines than sandpaper and Scotch Brite Pads. A while back, I bought a Cab Block to use with my Abralon Pads and now there are hardly any, if any at all noticeable sanding lines.

abralon pada are the way to go.. They come in several different grits and are  very easy to use with water or without..

I threw all my scotchbrite pads and sandpaper away when I started using those..

Removing them might not necessarily be a good thing. You can either use a cross hatch method to sand the ball all over to get an even finish (although you will still see some scrathches... Hey, it is sanded!) or make sure that the final sanding lines from a spinner are in line with your initial track. This will help you through the heads (only a little), and once the ball flares and changes axis tilt, these lines become square to the ball movement and add (some) traction for the back end.
