Title: Homemade ball spinner?
Post by: gtkpr31 on December 02, 2008, 05:18:10 AM
So, I recently picked up a 1/3 hp motor from a friend.  I wanted to make my own ball spinner but I find myself staring at the motor wondering how I'll go from that to a spinner lol.  Has anyone made their own or know how?  This poor college student doesn't have the means to go out and pick one up so that's why I'm trying to make my own.  Any input would be appreciated.

I made one that mounts through a workbench table top using a blade spindle from a riding lawnmower, a belt, 1/2hp motor from a washing machine, a 1" pulley for the motor drive shaft, a couple of stainless steel mixing bowls nested together for strength, a very large door hinge, a appliance leveling foot, a couple pieces of scrap angle iron, and a scrap piece of 1/4"x6"x10" plate aluminum, various nuts, bolts, and washers. As you can see it takes a few parts, I was lucky the only things I had to purchase were the bowls(Target), the blade spindle(used at a lawnmower repair shop for 15.00), the pulley(tractor supply), the belt(tractor supply), all the rest I had laying around my shop. I would suggest buying one if you don't have all this kind of stuff laying around (it would probably be cheaper) and if you have to ask how to make one to begin with (no offense intended), because you need just a little bit of mechanical know-how and shop tools ect. to pull all this off.

Very Inventive!

how many revs is that dizzy? does that provide enough torque to put pressure on the ball?

Hi Kevin,

I have to check how many RPMs I get out of it. The drill has a strong 1,6 hp(!) motor, with a reduction for very high torque in concrete. I use it on lowest gear (and it can be trimmed well through the manual trigger) for the balls, I'll have a look. It is not too much, the surface does not heat up. Biggest problem so far is rather to get the torque onto the ball - the cup tends to slip under the ball when I go full throttle, and with a current modification to the cup I added a foamed pad inlay that holds the balls pretty well in place.
