Alrighty, post your homemade cleaners here. I wanna hear from those of you who make your own cleaners from other types of cleaners...

went to wal mart and bought a big jug of castrol super clean degreaser.  i've been mixing it with about 50& alcohol.  been using this concoction for about 5 weeks.

works pretty good on lane oil and ball return marks.  leaves the ball with a mild tacky feeling.

i figured what the hell . . . if my ball doesn't dissolve, i saved a ton of money!!!

badshot, that sounds like a good cleaner to me. i use a 50-50 mixture of simple green and alcohol. it works great and is cheap. oh, don't be surprised if you are knocked for your use of alcohol by a certain person who visits this site. his name starts with an "s" and ends with a "n".

I use a mixture of about 50% Simple Green, 30% water and about 20% Hook It.
It seem to stay homogenous and does an excellent job cleaning the ball at a
fraction of the cost of bowling ball specific cleaners.

I was told to use 3/4 alcohol, and 1/4 Mr. Clean.

Havent tried it yet, but i want to.

Now, Greg, don't we have enough ongoing spats around here lately?

FWIW, I often mix denatured alcohol from the hardware store with several other ingredients. It seems DA is used by Storm in most of their cleaners, in combination with other ingredients also. Even though DA by itself is disapproved, when used in combo with other ingredients, it has and is approved.

Denatured alcohol is based on ethanol (ethyl alcohol), whereas household alcohol is based on propanol (isopropyl alcohol) - different beasties.

leftside, why do you day that alcohol alone does nothing to a ball?  i sometimes use just alcohol on polished balls, and it seems to remove the lane oil pretty well.  just curious.  thx.

I use a diluted household cleaner. It doesn't evaporate so it takes a bit longer to clean every ball. But I'm happy with the effect. Saves me some money too. Regular cleaners (small bottles) from the bowling companies cost something like $10 here in Sweden.

Cleaned at least 10 balls last nite. Used 5 different cleaners.  Simple Green straight up still works the by far the best. Used 3 different brands of the $12.00 a 8 oz bottle stuff & the Simple Green wipe down afterwards still took oil & dirt off the ball.  " DOC's " & Simple Green.  Tough combo to beat

Greg: LOL! The inability to formulate complete words is an affliction that affect many Americans. But don't despair; there is hope -- intense therapies exist. Call Brunswick technical support and I'm sure they'll provide you with an answer.

With respect to badshot, I'm not going to knock him. In his initial post, he seems sincerely interested in finding the right answer to the ball cleaning question. I'm not going to go after anyone who shows natural curiosity and demonstrates the least amount of willingness to take valid input. The reality is that isopropyl alcohol adds zero value when cleaning a bowling ball. ZERO.

Leftside appropriately understands this, and badshot has asked him for further clarification. I'll leave it between them.

I use a mixture of Simple Green, rubbing alcohol, and water. Works really good. Simple Green gets the oil out and leaves a tacky feel and the rubbing alcohol just helps it dry a little faster and cleaner. It is pretty cheap to mix up as well.
