You can start with sandpaper and finish with the Abralon if you want to. You don't have to use them at all. I like them because they have a foam backing, water stays in it longer, it 'hooks' to my CAB, and they last longer. They are more expensive, but I always want to turn out a finished product for my customers , a ball that I would want to have. If I'm not satisfied with the job, then it was a crappy job and they aren't getting what they paid for, so I use the pads.
I usually start with 220 or 320 sandpaper work my way up to 500 and then switch to the pads, but from there on , it's Abralon .
