Embedded Oil vs Dirt
« on: August 05, 2003, 02:08:44 AM »
I was talking to Del Warren awhile back about ball care, and he told me that getting the oil out of the ball was highly overrated...the lane doesn't know that there is oil embedded in the ball.

The real issue, he said, is dirt clogging up the pores of the balls and not the oil at all.

Now, I know it's his job to sell Track stuff, but I did buy some Clean & Dull and Reaction Plus and they did seem to do a good job for me.  Maybe we take the oil-removal too seriously, and should concentrate on the part of the ball that actually contacts the lane.

Not to be nasty but ..
Since when is it up to the lane to reconize anything we do?

No, the lane doesn't know there's oil in the ball, BUT the balls "knows" when it cant absorb any more oil. One of THE main purposes to use resin, as currently formulated for bowling balls, was its incredible ablity to absorb oil. It can absorb oil at a SIGNIFICANTLY greater rate than ordinary urethane. Together with a dynamic core's ability to flare, a resin ball has an incredible ability to hook, when not dirty and not soaked with oil.

Yes, dirt, embedded into the surface of a ball is important. How much more important than oil, is it more important than oil? I can't say, but I would not ignore one at the expense of the other.

I also use Clean and Dull; it is great stuff and works to beat the band.

I wonder about many things bowling ball people say. I don't always say they are wrong. I just wonder. Except maybe Phil Cardinale; to him, I listen intently.
