Hot Water Turned Ball White????
« on: February 07, 2008, 07:31:27 PM »
So I traded for a Big Shot and when it arrived I noticed some dlight discoloration on the opposite side of the ball from my fingers.  I was pissed thinking it was a blem or something and thought I got screwed!  I thought it might be some kind of residue so I gave it a short hot water bath after I slowly brought the ball to room temp.  I looked at the ball while it was in the water and it looked fine but as soon as I took it out it turned white!  What is this all about?  I then decided to sand it to 2000 grit and the white was still there.  Then I applied some simple green/alchohol/water cleaner to it and the white went away.  It wasn't something on the surface, I beleive it is in the resin itself because if I dribbled a little cleaner on a spot and let it sit there you could actually see the white stuff dissapear.  Anyone know what this is all about?  I give hot water baths all the time and have never had anything like this happen before.

looks to me it was this phasing phenomenon some people talk about...

but in my oppinion water is soaked into the ball (H2O molekules are much smaller than the lane conditioner) and when you applied the alcohol you displaced the H2O with alcohol... but I am not sure.

I read somewhere that people weighted the ball and after the bath it was a lot heavier and I also found that on fresh bathed ball the reaction is sh1t till game 3 and then the ball comes alive... wait ~12h after the bath and the ball works straight from the beginning but that was just my experience with an Track Arsenal Angular which is also a particle..

Overall I dare to say the effect of colour change is reversible and there should be done no harm to the ball and the benefit from the hot water bath is there.

Yes, it's phasing. Harmless, comestical - either do some surface refreshment, or simply ignore the color change and let teh ball suck up oil again. Initially the track area will get back to normal, and after some time the oil will move through the coverstock pores and get it back as it was.

I had this on my S&A when I de-oiled it teh first time, and the sky blue/salmon pearl ball turned into a solid violet-grey/orange orb! Absolute Infernos (same coverstock) were also prone to this.

Very little if any water is left over after it is taken out and dried with a towel.  If someone told you they weighed a ball after a bath and it was a lot heavier they are lying.  The color change doesn't effect the balls reaction at all and if you want to get rid of it just clean the ball with alcohol as stated in the original post.

ok, thanks guys.  I am glad it is nothing to worry about.  I just thought it was weird how it turned white after I pulled it out of the bath and wiped it off.  Kinda freaked me out.
