How long before sanding calms down
« on: December 16, 2018, 09:22:50 AM »
So you just refreshed your solid at your favorite grit. How long before that sanding “calms” down ? Seems like when I refresh a ball it hooks during practice and for a few frames and then loses a couple of boards.

What grit are you using? Every time you throw a ball.down the lane, the surface changes.

There are youtube videos that show the change in surface grit after each game in a 3 game set.  BTM also has published studies showing similar results.  All were measured using a laser scanner.
Seeing the results for the first time come as a shock to a lot of people.  But, as Impending Doom stated the surface grit of the ball changes each time it goes down the lane.

I usually finish with either 1500 or 2000 grit. Just seems like after I freshen a ball that during practice the ball is hooking nice and after and maybe midway through the first game I lose a couple of boards. Just wondering if this is what other people experience.

At that grit, you are probably losing a bit of reaction because the ball is bleeding off some energy in the fronts. Is there a reason you use that low of a grit?

The balls I use recommend that grit. Will be experimenting with 3-4000 soon.

The surface needs to match the condition you're bowling on. Sounds like you're using too much surface. What the manufacturer recommends is just that. A recommendation.

That may be true, but why does it change from from practice or the middle of the first game ? What I’m wondering is how long does it take for that new sanding to start changing.

Surface changes with every shot. What I think you're missing is that you're using TOO much surface. As the pattern changes, your ball (don't know which one yet) is expending too much energy in the middle of the lane. You need to use less surface

Actually has happened with most balls I have used. I have Radical Katana Dragon, Radical Cash, Radical Guru Supreme, DV8 Guru. Some nights it just seems (after a fresh sanding)the ball moves real nice in practice and into the first game but then I need to move to where I’m not putting the ball out as much or even square up . Being a lefty I usually don’t have much company on my side. Maybe I’m throwing slower in practice (meters aren’t on)? Getting an og Katana soon so we’ll see what happens then with a polished ball.

Now the question becomes... Do you actually need that much ball? All those you listed are balls that need a lot of oil.

It's very possible that there isn't enough oil for any of those at 1500-2000. Going to 4000 surface or even polishing could be useful

Half way through game 1 when the ball starts losing hook move towards the oil. Rate of change depends on the hardness of the ball,  ball surface,  hardness of the lane and the lanes surface,  amount of oil,  rev rate and likely other things.

Most of those are very strong covers. Keeping them at 1500 will basically blow a hole in the middle of the lane. If you need a ball to start off at 2000, then you need to change to a ball at 4000 or polish to get more bounce off of the hole you've blown in the mids
