Factory Finish vs Snake Oil
« on: May 25, 2009, 06:21:03 PM »
To those that have experience with both of these polishes, what do you find the differences and similarities are?  I was looking at Snake Oil and the purpose of it seems similar to that of Factory Finish(increase length and backend).  Snake Oil is supposed to take a ball to a 1500 to 3500 grit polish(I'm guessing that depends mainly on time and pressure applied), does that mean it doesn't matter whether you polish over 320 grit or 4000 grit using this product?

What is your preference between the two and why?

Factory finish on which ball?

It matters a bunch. There are no abrasives in Snake Oil, so unlike a polishing compound, the underlying grit won't be changed by adding the Snake Oil. To me that makes it easier to replicate. My personal results have been best when I add the Snake Oil to a ball at 1000 to 2000, but that could vary widely based on your own attributes and conditions bowled on.

Kevin at Valentino's is the real expert, so hopefully he'll see the post and chime in...

Whose "Factory finish"?
Some FF polishes do not have abrasives in them: Lanemasters and Brunswick come to mind. Some do: Ebonite's and Storm's.

I have never seen any statement to this effect. In fact, Kevin V. has said time and again: it has no abrasives in it and it does not change the underlying grit. Because of that it matters a great deal the grit level on which you apply Snake Oil. I generally use it over any grit level from 600 grit US/1000 grit Abralon (FEPA) to Trizact's white pad (~6000 grit FEPA).

I just checked my bottle of SO. I says nothing about grit numbers whatsoever.

Because of the way ball's react with it and because of the way in which it goes on, Snake Oil is my preferred polish, in general. I do use others, when I feel they do what I need.

We say 1500 to 3500 on the website to give the buyer a "sense of shine," but Snake Oil doesn't have a grit. The more pressure and spin time, the higher gloss your going to get. This allows you to fine tune the surface because a 1500 grit under base is going to get more length than a 500.

Sorry guys, I was referring to Ebonite/Powerhouse's Factory Finish.  Thank you for your replies.  I was mostly curious about there being any grit in Snake Oil because I've always read that it was non-abrasive but the web site seemed to imply otherwise.  Thanks for exaplaining it Kevin.

If/when I get my own spinner, Snake Oil will definitely be my polish of choice.  Good job to the guys at Valentino for making such a product.
