Inferno and Ultimate-similar prep, but......
« on: November 30, 2004, 08:34:55 AM »
I bought both an original inferno and an ultimate inferno to see how similar the balls would be when identically prepped. I had applied Doc's to the UI, but have removed all of it now....

I prepped both balls by sanding to 400 and then applying Clean and Sheen. Both balls are 4x2 layout for my LH, low-med rev style. Prep is as identical as I can make it.

I expected the OI to go a bit longer, but have the same arc shape. That's not at all what I found.

The UI seems to have a solid continuous hard arc with minimal skid flip.

The OI gets thru heads equal to UI, maybe a bit longer, and is MUCH more skid flip. No arc at all. That's not at all what I expected.

Any thoughts as to why I see this reaction comparison?

My 2 cents, which may differ from others:

Pearlized coverstocks become pearlized by different methods in each manufacturer. Such machinations produce a different coverstock, in word (technically) and in deed (in practice). Sanding will produce different ball reactions in each manufacturer, given the different pearlization methods.

You should not expect any particular reaction, but take what you see as the difference and use it to your advantage.

You might have to aim your particular question at both the manufacturer's (in this case, Brunswick's) technical representative AND their chemical engineers who created the particular pearlization technique.
